trump is dragging his feet on testifying in order to put the event as close as he can to

the election in November. If it's too close, Mueller is in a bind because of "influencing the election" with a subpoena to force him to come to the table or the interview itself because trump will squeal like a stuck hog about what he was asked.

grand jury proceedings are not public. the only part that becomes public is any indictment, if it happens.

mueller and team won't leak, they've been quite disciplined so far.

even if indictments come down, they can be sealed until after the election, if mueller deems that appropriate.

the only blabbing will come from donnie and his cronies, and that's not mueller's fault.

and virtually everyone else on the planet.

But the reality is that the office of President swings a pretty damn heavy bat. When you have the Chief justice of the Supreme court on speed dial, and an entire Federal agency dedicated to protecting you (the SS), it would be naive to think there isn't dozens rabbits that can be pulled out of a hat to delay and frustrate the process.

Mueller is extremely powerful, but it would be unfair to say that subpoening a President, any President is a trivial matter.

Sure, his folks and the WH are talking (hesitate to say negotiating) about a voluntary session, but the Dotard's minions are trying everything they can to delay and minimize.

Mueller knows the second he drops a subpoena, the appeal process will start with SCOTUS as the ultimate destination. He won't want to start that media circus until he absolutely has to.

It's quite possible that along the way he'll have enough to get an indictment from the Grand Jury and may have keep them sealed while working the other issues. Given his history, Trump would say things publicly that reinforced any sealed charges and likely raise additional avenues.
