Two lawmakers on Tuesday evening erupted into a shouting match on the House floor over Speaker Paul Ryans firing and then reinstatement of the House chaplain, reigniting a contentious religious fight the Wisconsin Republican hoped would fade.
No. 4 House Democrat Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.), who is Catholic, and Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-N.J.) got up in each others faces on the House floor and squabbled over the merits of a special investigation into the dismissal. The exchange was so heated that some lawmakers and aides watching worried theyd come to blows, though Crowleys office said that was never going to happen.
The rare display of anger on the chamber floor, which is governed by strict rules of decorum, shows the forced resignation of Father Patrick Conroy remains a hot button issue. The standoff, in fact, came days after Ryan, under pressure internally and externally, backtracked on his decision to push out Conroy.
The confrontation started after Crowley offered a privilege resolution to establish a select committee to investigate Conroys forced resignation. Democrats have accused Republicans of discriminating against Catholics, though Ryan, himself a Catholic, has said his conference members had pastoral needs that werent being fulfilled.

(9,353 posts)Isnt there supposed to be a separation of church and state?
Also have a problem with the National day of prayer. What is that all about?
And, yes, it's obviously a church/state violation. I don't see how it could be spun any other way. Plenty of religious institutions in DC for the lawmakers who require shamans and spiritual advisers. No need to waste tax money.

(6,854 posts)Have to understand that they want a theocracy that will eliminate Catholics, Jews, Episcopalians, Methodists and any "high church" Christians from any religious influence.

(508 posts)The only use republican'ts have for religious people is to pretend to care about what Jesus would want to do.
Nobody with a brain believes any of the republican'ts actually care about what Jesus would want or would accept a word of advice from Jesus.
There is absolutely nothing in the republican't agenda that Jesus would support.
Any religious person with a shred of decency would avoid any association with republican'ts.
Then, you have the Evil-gelicals who supported Roy Moore. They are the only kind of so-called "religious" people who should stand beside republican'ts.
