1. I bet his approval among Liberal Democrats is higher than this

on election day. I think this poll is sort of useless - would much rather see a poll on how many plan to phone bank, give money, etc...and compare to 4 years ago.

3. He's lost 1% since the last Gallup. Ominous trend? And 40 weeks to go, too.

You know, the one that says you can't be Liberal and still support Obama.

edit to add: Perhaps I should say that "no true Liberal would support Obama" (that's a joke for anyone familiar with the No True Scotsman Fallicy)

6. I guess DU doesn't reflect the general public.

On DU the people that take the liberal views on a given subject tend to be more critical of President Obama than the people that take the Conservative view. For example on the indefinite detainment of suspected terrorists, the liberals hate it and the conservatives love it. The liberals want single payer health care and the conservatives don't think it is a big deal.

I think that the 83% may be a mile wide and an inch deep. And the 53% for conservatives may be a mile wide and over your head deep.

8. Well, the raw number is pretty meaningless

Who is a "liberal" Democrat? If Rahm Emanuel described himself as such, would his response qualify? What does it mean to "approve" of the Obama administration? Do people say they "approve" of it in contrast to some hypothetical McCain administration? Do they approve of military drone killings of civilians and citizens? What specific questions and issues are asked, or is it enough for a person - sorry, a liberal Democrat - to say he or she "approves" of the administration because they have a 51-49% good feeling about the administration?

These are old questions, but they remain unanswered by this poll or any of the folks who post this result. So it's pretty meaningless.

11. There's a significant difference between bright eyed idealism and political realities.
Mon Jan 2, 2012, 11:52 PM

As far as I can tell the vast majority of Obama supporters are for things like single payer, but they know the political realities. They get mocked for pointing out the political realities, as if some idealist view is going to matter much when it comes down to it.

The 83% number is the number of liberal democrats, some who may be in fact idealists, who see the other team and aren't going to throw Obama under the bus like anonymous posters on web forums attempt to do.

10. I guess they don't stand for anything worthwhile either.

Whomever Gallup manages to reach who considers themselves to be a "Liberal Democrat".

What a meaningless figure, that does nothing to help all the disenfranchised do better under this administration's unsuccessful policies that double-down on so many bad conservative ideas.

The disenfranchised means anyone, for instance, who could potentially be considered a terrorist by this or any future administration and detained indefinitely without any rights whatsoever.

Wow, the inhumanity.

And people still need to believe that Obama is popular. Or even should be.

Do we stand for nothing?

13. Cause for panic! He used to be loved by 253% of liberal Democrats.

But, in all seriousness, liberals are now increasingly identifying themselves as independents, not Democrats.

"83% of all liberal Democrats" is a much smaller number than "83% of all liberals." It's a very misleading statistic.
