FLIPPABLE: Anna Eskamani for FL-HD47

Anna V. Eskamani is an Orlando native and daughter of immigrants who has worked relentlessly to protect all members of her community through effective advocacy, bold leadership, and smart management.

Anna has been a lifelong community builder, and she will bring her passion for helping people to Tallahassee.

The Eskamani family is no stranger to adversity. Anna’s father worked full time as a waiter in college and graduated with an electrical engineering degree from UCF in 1994.

He would work at Florida’s Space Coast for nearly 10 years but in an effort to make ends meet, also worked as a customer service representative at Walt Disney World on the weekends.

During this time, Anna’s mother worked minimum wage jobs at fast food restaurants and K-Mart. Anna, her twin sister Ida, and older brother Arya, would spend late nights helping their mother at K-Mart clean the shelves and refold clothes.

After fighting a five year battle with cancer, Anna’s mother passed away in 2004. Anna was 13 years old. This loss in her family, coupled with the challenges her parents faced, inspires Anna every day to work hard for the most marginalized members of her community.

Anna and her siblings are graduates of Orange County Public Schools. They each attended Bonneville Elementary School, Corner Lake Middle School, and University High School.

Anna was a community builder even early in life. At age 10, she successfully collected petitions to keep her best friend from being relocated to another lunch time. While in high school, Anna was involved in the performing arts as a theatre tech, working backstage and building props, costumes, and set pieces.

It was an AP Government teacher during her senior year that brought Anna back into the field of civic engagement.

Today, Anna continues her academics as a PhD student in Public Affairs at UCF, serves as an adjunct professor, and works full time as a Senior Director for Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida* where she manages a team across 22 counties and is known in the legislature and across the nation as an advocate for women’s health and equality.

Anna serves on numerous community boards and has proven herself as a leader who works hard, delivers results, and gets things done.

Orlando Democrat Anna Eskamani raised another $22,300 in April for her campaign to replace exiting Republican Rep. Mike Miller in House District 47.

Eskamani brought in $18,800 of that money through her campaign account and raised the other $3,500 through her committee, People Power for Florida, putting her just past the $250,000 mark in total fundraising.

Her campaign report showed more than 170 contributions, continuing her trend of adding dozens of small-dollar donations month-to-month. She also brought in four checks for $1,000, the maximum contribution for state legislative races.

April’s max donors were former Florida League of Women Voters head Pamela Goodman, the Harriett Lake Family Trust, Ironworkers Local Union #808 and Orlando speech pathologist Laura Smith. Equality Florida deputy director Michael Farmer came in just under the cap with a $950 contribution.

The campaign also showed about $8,500 in spending in the new report, including $2,861 to Orlando-based Print Meisters and $2,500 to pay for campaign staff.

The committee cash came in through two contributions, a $2,500 check from Tampa attorney Crystal Whitescarver and $1,000 from Maria Ruiz-Hayes. People Power for Florida’s lone April expenditure was a $1,500 payment to Tallahassee law firm Hollimon PA.

Eskamani went into May with nearly $187,000 banked – $162,290 in hard money and another $24,650 in her committee.

Eskamani is the only Democrat running for HD 47, which is being vacated by Winter Park Rep. Mike Miller, who is running in the Republican Primary for Florida 7th Congressional District.

Her closest competitor, Winter Park Republican Stockton Reeves, raised $2,275 last month. Since filing for the race in July he’s brought in $120,470, including $94,700 in candidate loans. He had $105,583 at the ready on April 30.
