Witness at House's "English Only" hearing has ties to hate group

Ryan J. Reilly August 2, 2012, 6:19 AM 7112

"A Republican witness at today’s House Judiciary subcommittee hearing on legislation making English the official language of the United States is from an organization with ties to racism.

Dr. Rosalie Porter, chairwoman of the board of ProEnglish, is testifying in support of the “English Language Unity Act of 2011” before the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution on Thursday morning.

ProEnglish is headed by executive director Robert Vandervoort, who came under fire for hosting a panel at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) this year featuring Peter Brimelow of the website VDARE, an organization labeled as a white nationalist hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The panel also featured a speech from then-National Review editor John Derbyshire, who would later be fired from the magazine for writing a racist article in the wake of the shooting of Trayvon Martin."

Much more at link.

WHAT A SURPRISE! Not. So glad this is more important than creating jobs, eradicating poverty, etc.

They really don't care about the Hispanic vote, do they?

Ugh. Loathe them.

... to attract the xenophobe vote than the Hispanic vote. They are, of course, right about that: even without this, they won't be attracting voters who are Hispanic.

Puerto Ricans are citizens? As are the Chamorros of Guam and residents of other US territories.

Does having an "official" language mean we don't have services in German or Japanese for tourists or business types coming here spending money?

Whilst there may be few Hawaiians or native Americans who speak only the old tongues, does having an "official" language mean there will no longer be support to keep those languages from going extinct?

ESL courses already have long waiting lists, and forcing Puerto Ricans into them to get a drivers license is pointless, stupid, probably unconstitutional, and stems from bigotry. Forcing Hispanic immigrants into them probably isn't unconstitutional, but still pointless, stupid, and bigoted. Forcing French or Italian long term visitors into them isn't bigoted, but is pointless and stupid.
