The Biblical Definition of marriage is
- An arranged marriageGenesis 24:1-4 (and many other passages)
- A levirate marriage (If a man died leaving no male heir, his brother was required to marry his widow and produce children)Deuteronomy 25:5-10
- A polygamous marriage1 Kings 11:3 (and many, many other passages)

- Filled with sexual prohibitionsno intercourse during menstruation (The woman is unclean. Yet another degradation of women.) The woman cannot withhold sex from her husband; she has to fulfill his desire for sex when he wants it. (And another example of the Bibles misogyny)

The simple fact of the matter is that most bigots are bigots, not because they were persuaded by the inherent logic of their bigotry, but because they fear and distrust anyone who isn't just like them. And more and more I think the definition of "just like them" involves being able to mentally project themselves into someone else's shoes. It only takes a few perceived differences before that projection is blocked, and discomfort begins to set in.
Likewise, most bigots are deaf to persuasion by logic, no matter how rational, precisely because they cannot imagine themselves in that other person's shoes. I think it's a subtle thing, too-- all it takes is a minute possibility of projection, even the barest recognition that "yeah, that could be me," to combat overt bigotry.
So on some level, bigotry comes down to a lack of imagination, an inability to see one's self in someone else's place.
