or one of the last gasps. A new Pew poll on support for GLBT rights shows increased support for GLBT rights up across the board- though with repubs it only shows a 5% rise.
Yes, it's distressing to see hate so enthusiastically endorsed, but the haters are losing.

(20,634 posts)It was the same old tea party constituency that turns up for every reactionary right wing gathering. Very few young people, no minorities.

(272 posts)there were plenty of minorities where I was yesterday. Many blacks and latinos happen to hold the same view of gay marriage that Dan Cathy does. President Obama also had the same view until a few months ago...

(9,214 posts)It can't be because of short memory, many if not most probably still experience discrimination daily.
Why would they discriminate against another minority?
I'm Irish and have read about the wide spread discrimination against the Irish years ago, but only experienced two cases of being discriminated against for being Irish personally. That was enough for me to swear to try my hardest not to discriminate against others.

(36,437 posts)I don't think that progress is automatic, and reaction can be devastating and very real, but in this case, there's not a whole lot of turning back.

(23,500 posts)If the Repiglickins get in, they get to put more wingnuts on the Court.
Lawrence v. Texas would be overturned. Then the debate would instantly shift from whether gays should be allowed to marry,
to whether gays should be thrown into prison. Those sodomy laws that are still on the books would go back into effect, and
very likely start being enforced again. Teabagger legislatures would pass new ones.
Support for gay rights in national polls would be of little comfort to gays who live in those states.

(23,796 posts)I agree with you. I think this is just a kneejerk "way we were" for an outmoded belief that's going down hard. It just may take Chick-fil-A with it, now that Dan Cathy's so happy to openly tie his company's brand to anti-gay activism.

(24,853 posts)"Chick-fil-A generated $492 million in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization on revenue of $1.12 billion in 2011, PrivCo said. It added that the companys 44 percent Ebitda margin was virtually unheard of in the restaurant industry.
The chain has the biggest sales per unit in fast-food, according to QSR Magazine. In 2011, the company generated gross sales of $2.9 million per location, outpacing the average unit sales of runner-up McDonalds Corp. (MCD) by $400,000, the magazine said in its August 2012 issue. (They did this despite being open only 85% of the time McDonald's is)
PrivCo said it valued Chick-fil-A at $4.5 billion using peer multiples of Oak Brook, Illinois-based McDonalds, Dublin, Ohio-based Wendys Co. (WEN) and closely held Wichita, Kansas-based Wil-Ken Enterprises Inc., which operates Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits restaurants. The calculation factored in the companys 3-year annual growth rate and Ebitda margins, the report said.
The chicken chain has a value of at least $4.3 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg, based on the average enterprise value-to-Ebitda and price-to-earnings multiples of four publicly traded peers: McDonalds, Wendys, San Diego-based Jack In the Box Inc. (JACK) and Louisville, Kentucky-based Yum! Brands Inc. (YUM), the owner of the KFC and Taco Bell brands.
It is a very impressive business story, said Sam Hamadeh, CEO of PrivCo, in a telephone interview. Whatever people think of the politics, when you look at how we quantify the amount of money they are forgoing every year by being closed on Sundays, you have to respect that.
I've never eaten there in my life, so I can say I've been boycotting them for over 51 years. I hadn't heard anything about the politics of their CEO before he exposed himself so I don't think ALL of their customers can be counted as bigots, but it's going to be interesting to see what happens to those numbers in the future.
