(17,984 posts)Part of my problem is that our lilacs come in a variety of colors, sometimes on the same tree!
Here is a picture demonstrating how dark our lilacs can be. I should be forgiven for thinking of "violet" or even "purple".

Crape myrtles come in white, light pink, lavender, purple, bubble gum pink, fushia, hot pink, watermelon, and red.

My parents have these bushes in their backyard, and they come in various colors (the ones you mentioned). They always called them "lilac bushes", so that's what I believed them to be. You can't trust anyone anymore!
