German Chancellor Angela Merkel found the contentious Group of Seven summit with U.S. President Donald Trump a "sobering" and "depressing" experience but said European leaders won't be "taken advantage of" on trade. She conceded in an interview on German public television Sunday that the meeting's outcome "wasn't a great thing."
"I have spoken of a sobering experience, which for me is a lot," she added.
Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and the other leaders clashed with Trump over steel and aluminum tariffs as well as his decision to abandon a deal with Iran to limit its nuclear program.
The group managed a common statement in which they agreed to disagree on some issues, only to have Trump disavow the document in a tweet after leaving the meeting.
Merkel said that "taking it back by tweet was of course sobering and also a little depressing."
She said the European Union would "act" against the U.S. trade measures, which European leaders regard as going against the rules of the World Trade Organization.

(1,469 posts)I have seen a lot of great captions, but this looks like serious stuff. Sobering and depressing sums it up.

either one of those dick-taters say after this so-called "Historic Summit." They'll both spin it exactly to play to their cults. What a goddamned depressing week this is. And it's only Monday.

(82,849 posts)America cannot be trusted right now to keep its word. If you're depending on the United States to keep up its end of an agreement or a treaty or an informal obligation, you'd best change that. The United States is now the whimsical toy of an ignorant man-child with the attention span of a gnat and the ethics of Satan. Don't rely on us.

(51,589 posts)I can see him doing something dangerous, possibly permanent, to the country if he is forced out of office. Just look at him and his actions with these allies, he will destroy us in a heartbeat without any thought. He doesn't love this country, only himself. He is scaring me....his "crazy level" is rising quickly.

(19,060 posts)If our allies are smart, they're going to start forming alliances against America so they can protect themselves from the economic and eventually military aggression we're going to start showing.
We have a fascist regime running things and they are consolidating power, after they've done away with the legal system they'll seize our elections. But fascist regimes historically have never limited their power grabs to their own borders. Military aggression will most certainly be the result if Trump and his cabal stay in power long enough, and they will target our allies too.

(5,969 posts)It was said that Merkel preferred Clinton in 2008 (Obama was fresh and the unknown quantity back then). I guess that led to a rocky start with Obama but that relationship got better over the years. After the 2016 election, it's no secret that Merkel realized what was lost when Trump took over. You often only realize how much you value something after you've lost it.
