Desperate for a late lift in Iowa, Republican Michele Bachmann is increasingly stressing a distinction in the presidential field: She's the only woman competing for the nomination.
The Minnesota congresswoman has made the gender card central to her closing argument. She's urging voters to embrace the idea of a "strong woman in the White House" and is molding herself as "America's Iron Lady" in the vein of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
It's a play that carries as much risk as potential reward because some of the ardent religious conservatives she's aggressively courting have traditional views about gender roles.
History is not on Bachmann's side, either. Iowa has never elected a woman as governor or to its congressional delegation, a footnote shared only with Mississippi.

(102,270 posts)I'll decline to make any comment on the husband, but the declaration is bad enough.... Like Thatcher or hate her, no one can suggest she "deferred" or (gasp) vowed submission on all things to her husband. These RETHUG fundy women are beyond nuts if they think this would make any sane person think them to be Presidential material.

(17,505 posts)... that had Thatcher with a big cigar in her mouth saying "We will fight them on the beaches...."?

(17,505 posts)We have the "gender card", "race card" "victim card" (in VA) and the "liberal card"...
And not a single candidate is playing with a full deck.
To quote Babs Bush... what a "sorry lot".

(31,706 posts)Michele's problem was she was mamarily-imparied in the eyes of too many of Iowa's good ole boys. Women are supposed to be barefoot and preggers, not doing a "man's thing" like being a politician. The GOTB is stuck in the 19th century where women are to be seen (scantily if possible) and not heard (especially when it comes to their reproductive or civil rights). She only made slight ripples due to the failures of others and most likely will finish well out of the money. What's really "sad" (crocodile tears I tell ya) is how she overplayed her perceived personality...coming out looking weaker not stronger.

(32,083 posts)I almost feel sorry for her.
Almost.
If I had any shred of respect for Bachmann, this would have eliminated it. Thatcher is not a woman I would ever want to identify with. Hell, I'd rather be compared to any one of the GOP bimbos than Thatcher. And, I give Thatcher the credit of being a very intelligent, strong and independent woman. None of those traits are ones that our dear Bachmann holds. But, I can honestly say that I like Bachmann 100 times more than Thatcher. The war-mongering, evil bitch. She's Britain's version of Cheney.

(10,303 posts)Thatchers' politics are way far to the left of Bachmanns'. Pro choice, pro gay rights, pro universal health, pro gun control??? Yes there are policies that Bachmann and Thatcher would agree with but on these points these two individuals have a very different track record.
What an incredible ego this woman has. She can't stand up to Donald Duck, let alone Thatcher....
