The idea and failure of nationalism has really taught Germany a lesson, at least in the West. So you don't salute your flag, the national anthem lost its first stanza ( "Deutschland, Deutschland über Alles" ), the highest amount of black, red, and gold that can be seen is during soccer championships.

So the argument made in what you are citing is not patriotism as commonly defined. It is more of a collective awareness. And yes, Germans in general do have a collective awareness.
