They're usually bad excuses, and rarely withstand even the most cursory scrutiny, but the excuses are absolutely vital to what's going on. Credulous true believers and "open-minded"* observers alike either cling to the excuse to excuse their own complicity and support, or use the excuse as a shield to resist having to take action: "Now, now, let's wait just a moment and see if this transparently self-serving lie isn't actually the acme of reasoned discourse."

So the "breaking the law" excuse didn't really pan out. Blaming it on the Democrats didn't really persuade anyone. National security needs to be given its shot. And for some odd reason, with every new excuse that's trotted out, the popular media are simultaneously struck with amnesia, and completely forget about the string of previously proffered excuses.

*And by "open-minded," I'm referring to those folks whose brains have done fallen out their ear.
