Farm group: There's 'a lot of anxiety' over Trump tariffs

Matt Purdue, who is the Government Relations Representative for the organization, thinks there’s “a lot of anxiety” within rural communities across the country over the Trump’s trade policies, which impose steep tariffs on some of America’s closet allies like Canada and China.

“I think a lot of people are willing to take him at his word – that what he’s doing is going to be helpful for farmers and ranchers in rural communities,” Purdue said. “At the same time, there’s a lot of anxiety and I think that anxiety is growing over time.”

Purdue acknowledged that Trump was right to be point out the flaws in U.S. trade policy and make sure that America gets a fair shake on a global scale when it comes to trade agreements. He pointed to one of the main concerns for the National Farmer’s Union – country-of-origin labeling (COOL). This is a consumer labeling law that requires retailers to identify the country of origin where certain foods are processed.

But instead of being able to bring stronger trade agreements to the table, Purdue says the president has sparked a trade war.

Just my 2 cents. But it sounds like it would wind up sitting in their bellies like a stone over the long term.

A system like that is in a different direction than paying farmers not to grow certain crops to achieve price controls. This system is "welfare" plain and simple.

trading partners. I'm sure that there are many providers willing and eager to step in and sell instead of the US...leaving our farmers on the edge of potential disaster and seriously disrupting markets.

This is to hit all of us in the pocket by inflating cost of just about everything...

I hope someone is watching the inflation factor starting when rump took office and then going forward on a month by month basis to track how costly rump is going to be for all of us (let alone bankruptcy, being that rump is such an expert at already).

Once the new sources are established, they're not likely to ever return to the Midwest.

The same will be happening with pork, corn, fruit and wheat.

I read where soybean prices are already plummeting. The farmers are screwed and many will lose everything.

They attribute blame based on what they are told, and they are only ever told by Fox News that it is somehow the "Democrat Party's" fault.

When all you hear is propaganda, you begin to believe the propaganda.

They get water that is heavily subsidized.

Crop prices artificially propped up.

We practically trade dump our crops on to other countries.

We also mass produce crops and livestock.

Democratic Congress members for decades have let this go by in exchange for programs to feed poorer americans, foreign aid, etc. Meanwhile, the Republicans kept this welfare program going to keep getting votes.

The farmers that survive will still vote for them like lemmings. Some that don't however, will become ranch hands on farms they used to own...but given we will probably lose market share for a very long time, some of those farms may become retired. The rest will have to move to where they can find work....usually in blue states.

Interestingly, GOP politicians are probably still safe in those red districts. But they sure as hell will see a decline in population, income, etc. and by preponderance, infrastructure, etc.

(apparently public broadcasting is lingering on the "how did this happen? better ask the all-powerful Trump supporters to see if it's still happening" topic.)

anyway, this one rancher's pleased as fucking punch that Trump is the president, despite the fact that beef tariffs are about to lose him access to the Chinese markets (fastest growing market for certain cuts of beef that aren't popular in America). he sees his incoming temporary drop in profits as a price he's willing to pay for the National Greatness he's positive is on its way. he says now that Trump is elected he feels proud, confident that rural interests are finally well-represented in Washington DC. he merrily decorates his ranch in American flags and Trump signage, praising Trump for keeping his campaign promises.

the other rancher wasn't quite as enthusiastic, but she was still 100% on board the Trump Train to Toiletville.

> quit voting for the asshole
if you're expecting these fools to wise up, it's going to take much much more than the tariffs to do it. they'll gladly lose their family farms and ranches to industrial ag giants as long as they get to feel top-down Greatness when they turn on the TV.

> It's obvious he doesn't have your interests in mind
their perceptions of their interests diverge sharply from our perceptions of their interests. these people have their own ideologies that they feel Trump and friends are servicing adequately. we won't reach them with economics alone.

their perceptions of their interests diverge sharply from our perceptions of their interests.

If someone repeatedly votes against their interests, it's very likely you don't understand what their actual interests are. These aren't actually stupid people, for the most part. Just very mean-spirited people.
