Police tackled him for stealing a car. It was his own.

Last edited Wed Jul 4, 2018, 01:24 PM - Edit history (1)

One cop joked he was "lucky" he wasn't shot!

I was face down on the pavement. One police officer was kneeing me in the back, while others pulled or punched. They paid no attention to my screams identifying myself as an engineering Ph.D. student at Northwestern University. They just kept punching. One shouted, "Stop resisting!"

The record is on the dash-cam footage: It's nighttime. I step out of my car, bewildered at being pulled over and surrounded by police vehicles in the college town I've lived in for years. I hold my hands up high, shocked to see several guns pointed at me. It turns out a fellow student had called the police to report that someone was trying to steal a car. That someone was me. The car was my own. I had a key.

This is wrong on so many levels. What the heck is wrong with the police in this country? As a citizen of the USA, this makes me ashamed.

I'm ashamed too greatlaurel. That young man overcame so much. He's among the best and the brightest in our country. But a racist student and law enforcement treat him like that! He should do whatever it takes to get the arrest off his record.

given the circumstances of his childhood.
If you are getting punched and kneed in the back, I don't even know if you can lay still and take it without a reaction. To then get charged with resisting arrest while the cops apparently don't face consequences, is absurd.

"I don't know if I'm, like, racial profiling," the woman had told the 911 dispatcher.

Yes, you were unless you would have called the police for a white guy getting into his car as well.

and instead makes them hurt, maim and sometimes even kill people who don't deserve to be treated like that.

I'm 59 years old and I've paid a boatload of taxes over my lifetime. And, I'll tell you, as a disabled man, if the cops in my city ever did this shit to me and I survived, which would be doubtful because of my health, I'd sue the department and each officer individually for everything they would EVER earn, and I would devote the rest of my life to reforming this motherfucking shithole system.

Sorry for that rant, but I pay for police to serve and protect me, not to maim or kill me, and there's something REALLY wrong with this training.

Why do these men want to be policemen? To hit people legally? To get out their aggressions... legally? These aren't really the kind of policemen we need. They are abusers who need therapy, not a job that allows them to be monsters to us.

They are not psychologically fit to be real law enforcement officers. But some asshole hires them anyway, some asshole who shouldn't be in that position either because they are psychologically damaged as well. They may talk a good game in public but their cruelty just shows they are not fit for the job.

We need better people to take over and stop hiring these dumbfucks who think being a police officer is a license to be an asshole.

Yea, I know. Seems like a pipe dream. But we need real maturity in the people who we give such responsibility to. This shit has gone on for too damn long.

The laws vary from state to state with respect to time frame. However, wrongful arrest would qualify for being expunged.

He was ordered out of his sports car and forced to lay face down on the sidewalk. Many passers by recognized him an shouted to the cops "It's Marcus Allen" but they were ignored and the cops continued to run their "check".

"Driving While Black" is still going strong, 40 years later.

They don't even give a person a chance to react. If I were told both to get on the ground and keep my hands up, I couldn't do it. My knees are bad! I can't even think of doing such a maneuver without anticipating the pain it would give me. Thank god I'm an old white guy, and these thugs aren't the police in my neighborhood.

They outnumbered the guy like 5 to 1 and still they all acted scared and reckless. Too often it is the police themselves causing the confusion and panic that leads to someone getting killed.

... I sometimes mull over how I couldn't pass the standing on one foot, walk toe to toe, etc parts of a DUI test. I could limp sort of straight with my cane but it would probably be considered a weapon and disallowed. And if I admitted that I had a low dosage Fentanyl patch on, they'd probably arrest me then and there even though it's legally prescribed and doesn't affect my driving.

I'm a 65 yr old white lady packing my disability parking permit so maybe they wouldn't throw me on the ground.

What galls me the most and concerns me the most is that calling the cops on a POC can easily get the person killed. If that happens, all the settlement money in the world doesn't make everything suddenly okay.

I wish I knew how to help, besides not calling the cops.

Trump supporter types - i.e. white racists.

That really sucks, and doubly so because the cops arrested this guy AFTER they found out he'd committed no crime. WHY??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Oh...because he committed the crime of going about his biz while being black.

It's dirtbags like the Koch brothers, the Mercers, Sheldon Adelson and the rest who do this to us. They figure if they can make me hate and mistrust black people, or immigrants, or Hispanic people or LGBTQ people, then I will be too busy with that to notice them picking my pocket.

Giant tax cuts for billionaires.

Gutting the New Deal.

Systematically transferring more and more and more of the cost of everything to taxpayers.

Busting our unions.

Taking away benefits and driving wages down.

Compromising on worker safety.

Nickel and diming us to death.

And in the meantime, there's this kid who is going to really be somebody - a PhD in materials engineering, and now because of some white dirtbag, he has an arrest on his record that he will now always have to explain. Why did the Chicago PD do that to him, anyway? They are supposedly there to serve and protect.
