The politics of slime
By Boston Herald Editorial Staff
<...>
Now, its worth noting that the inevitable demand for Romney to release more of his returns is coming from a man who has served in the Senate since 1987 but never released his own tax returns. A man who, in a long-forgotten campaign back in 1974, demanded that his opponents siblings including his sister, a nun release their tax returns.
But the credibility of Reid or his story hardly matter. The attack dog for the Obama campaign was simply doing his best to sink his canines into Romneys leg, to keep the issue of the candidates wealth front-and-center.
And if there were any doubt that Reids efforts were being coordinated with the Obama campaign, the presidents surrogates on Sunday eliminated it. On cue, both campaign adviser David Axelrod and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chair of the Democratic National Committee, told different networks that Romney could clear this issue up in 10 seconds, naturally by releasing more of his returns.
Theres no question Romney has enabled Team Obama in its petty politics by refusing to release more than two years of returns. But given Reids credibility problems, on this issue he comes across more like an attack poodle.

So what do they do?
Easy: they PRoject ("given Reid's credibility problems" and ignore the 10-seconds solution offered graciously to them.
This is getting fun!

(116,464 posts)3. Romney could
have destroyed Reid's credibility by releasing his returns (on edit, a caveat: the returns would have to contain no damaging infomration). Instead, he comes back with: Put up or shut up.
When he suggested that they would be politically "damaging," it was game over.
He's afraid.
Mitt Romney is gripped with fear about releasing his tax returns
