Elizabeth Warren backs off demand that Scott Brown release more tax returns
By Noah Bierman, Globe Staff
Elizabeth Warren demanded Monday that Senator Scott Brown release more years of his tax returns. The only problem was that Brown, her Republican rival, had already released six years of tax returns while Warren has refused to release more than four years of her filings.
Asked to reconcile that apparent conflict, Warren backed off her demand hours later, saying Tuesday that six years was enough. She did not, however, offer to release any more of her IRS filings.
The episode began on Monday night, when Warren called on Brown to release two decades worth of filings.
I think Scott Brown should release his tax returns for all the years hes been in public service, Warren said in Worcester Monday night, according to the website GoLocalWorcester.com. Hes been in public service for 20 years, then he should have 20 years of tax returns.

It's feeling more and more like Coakley's campaign against Brown- in other words, inept. Her handling of the Native American crap wasn't stellar either. This is a screw up that never should have happened.

(14,177 posts)She should have had an easy win. Now, we don't know if this will hurt her or not. But, we do know it is more likely to hurt her than it would if she were a Republican. Republicans don't care how sleezy their politicians are. But, Democrats if their is even a whiff of something unethical or that seems hypocritical will either not vote, vote another party, or worse for the opponent. I think she should just release her returns and apologize it will go a long way to fixing any problems her base has with this. It might help with Independents. Either way we don't need this as a distraction and it will I can guarantee it be used by the Romney campaign. I expect some time today Romney will be talking about Elizabeth Warren not releasing her returns.

or
3."I'm in the process of moving my money to the Caymans or Switzerland - not sure yet. Is that a problem?"
And so on...make it into a referendum on Romney's tax avoidance.
Can they hammer her for that? Is it because she's a woman? Sexism!!!

(2,627 posts)campaign contribution requests from Elizabeth Warren (have received five so far). While my own Senator Cantwell has yet to ask for anything from us, supporting another state's senate race isn't out the question.
What stopped our support for Warren was the story in April that she declined to pay the voluntary state tax rate of 5.85% but went with the lower 5.3% minimum. Seems with a reported 2011 earnings of $716,000 and reported net worth of $14.5 million it wouldn't set a family back that much to help incease their state's tax coffers.
Suppose if he'd ever release them, RMoney's tax returns would show that he also declined to help his state even as governor.

(10,960 posts)Great person, terrible politician.
People assume that folks they like will be effective electoral politicians, but that is not how it works.
I learned that with Wes Clark. Being an effective electoral politician is not something you can bone up on.
I have expected her to lose to Brown for months now.
