Mitt Romney on Tuesday called upon Harry Reid to reveal his source that claims Romney paid zero taxes over the previous 10 years, saying that the Senate Majority Leader has lost a lot of credibility.
I dont really believe that hes got any kind of a credible source, Romney told Fox News. I dont know who gave him this line of reasoning, whether it came from the White House or the DNC or a staffer, but he ought to say where it came from, and then we can find out whether that person has any credibility. I know they dont.

(116,464 posts)"The credibility lies in Mitt's tax returns not in the source or anywhere else."
...about what Mitt said:
If he knows the person has no credibility, how will releasing the name of the source change that?
It's almost a tacit admission that the next part of his statement, "I know they dont," is a lie.

(31,849 posts)What he is actually saying is:
"Once you disclose who told what, we will; then, attack that person's credibility ... But not by providing the only real proof, the tax filings."

(19,458 posts)You KNOW that is what they want to do. They want to rip that person to shreds, while still not releasing the returns.

(26,219 posts)Unless "the source" is in possession of the actual filed returns.
Ten'll get you 20 that Rmoney bragged about his crackerjack tax team within his "inner circle" thinking they were all under the dome of silence and protected by the "we all do it" clause.
Only way to "prove" anything is to release the returns.
cbdo2007
(9,213 posts)Right now we don't even know that a source exists and Romney can treat it like an attack. If you actually had someone on CBS Evening news with their voice changed and their face pixelated to hide their identity saying "I've seen his returns, he did this and this and this, and his UBS account, etc." then it would really put the pressure on Romney. I think this is coming eventually.
Ruby the Liberal
(26,219 posts)Then it really becomes he said/she said and an accusation war as opposed to just letting the question, What is Mitt hiding, hang out in thin air and continue the Romney-endorsed speculation game.

(12,461 posts)this source exists....WRONG MOVE. He should have just flat out denied the claim....but he opens the door...can't help himself. A good media would now have the scent, and onto a scoop of their careers...looking for Reid's source.
Reid doesn't have to do a thing. Just stand by the statement.

As Gibbs said, this is the only way Romney can win the argument:
and that's only if what is in his tax returns doesn't cause him more problems - which is apparently not the case.

(2,667 posts)Only the documents themselves can answer the question, it is the ink on the paper that is the only authority. It doesn't make a hoot in hell what Reid says, what Romney says, what anyone says, only what is written on the paper counts. And because the privacy of tax returns is only rivaled by the sanctity of the 2nd Amendment by our Government we can only see them if Romney himself discloses them. So the onus is on Mitt to bring the issue to and end.

(22,336 posts)That's what they call projection. All anyone wants is to see his tax returns. That's all. It isn't an unusual thing - it is STANDARD. The fact that he won't, and is so incredibly stubborn about it, raises serious concerns. There has to be something awful in there if he's that afraid of it. And the more he talks about why he won't release them, the more people are going to wonder why he's so afraid to release them. This won't go away.

(823 posts)For a seasoned liar, Romney is botching this one.
It makes sense to me that since Romney knows the truth of the matter, he would also know about the credibility of Reid's source. Thus, Romney, if he were being factual would be outraged over the lie being perpetrated over him than continuing to focus on the credibility of his accuser's source. In addition to Romney's obvious guilt of having something to hide by refusing to release his tax returns, he compounds his appearance of dishonesty by acknowledging that it is reasonable to think the allegations are true if the source is a credible person. An honest person with nothing to hide would not even think this way. He is so obviously trying to change the focus--away from himself.
progressivebydesign
(19,458 posts)Lame! They're trying SO hard to spin this, to turn it around that at this point? Unless someone is a huge fan of Romneys or hates the President that much, they're going to start saying "wait, he must be hiding SOMETHING."
He doth protest too much. In trying to turn it around, he's making even worse. "let's see if they have any credibility!" Ummm. No. Release the returns so we can see if they're telling the truth.
He's getting away with erasing everything from his computer and his staff computers, when they bought the hard drives after his time as Gov of Mass. He's getting away with making big claims about the SLC Olympics, though he donated the records and they are SEALED at a school in Utah. But this is not going away. It's getting much worse for him.
The only way to solve this is release the fucking returns.
