(42,239 posts)Tropical Storm Ernesto was forecast to become a hurricane as it picked up speed on its westward path over the southern part of the Bay of Campeche, Mexicos oil- production hub.
Ernestos top winds were 70 miles (112 kilometers) per hour, up from 65 mph earlier, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said in an advisory at 1 a.m. central time today. A Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale starts at 74 mph. The storms center was 30 miles north northeast of Paraiso, Mexico, and it was traveling west at 16 mph. Tropical storm-strength winds of 39 mph or more extend 140 miles from its core.
Some additional strengthening is expected and Ernesto is forecast to become a hurricane before making landfall, the center said in the advisory .The center of Ernesto will move across the extreme southern Bay of Campeche and make landfall, later today in the area from Veracruz to Chilitepec, it said.
