(17,003 posts)What does using a straw have to do with herpes?
Phoenix61
(17,003 posts)I'm confused about why you think a straw will decrease your risk of getting it.

Is a cold sore contagious?
Cold sores are most contagious when oozing blisters are present. But you can transmit the virus to others even if you don't have blisters. Shared eating utensils, razors and towels, as well as kissing, may spread HSV-1. Oral sex can spread HSV-1 to the genitals and HSV-2 to the lips.Jun 8, 2018

(17,003 posts)same washer. It's actually more of a sterilizer than a dish washer. Between the heat and the chemicals everything dies. But I get it. Everybody has something. I won't set silver ware on a restaurant table. I always put it on a napkin. The clothes they use to wipe tables can get pretty disgusting by the end of a shift.

(12,422 posts)That is not sterilizer....it is a wash basin tub with a few brushes....swish, swish...and set the glass up to drip dry....and serve another beer
I often get a glass with some red stuff on it...
But I still will not drink my beer thru a straw...

(17,003 posts)The health dept checks when they come through, however, I wouldn't count on all bars doing it correctly. So yeah, bar glasses may not be as clean as they should be. I've got it easy, strictly a beer girl and rarely, if ever, drink draft. The red stuff is lipstick. Amazingly, it doesn't stick to lips but damn sure sticks to glass. Pain in the tush if you are a bar tender.

(31,261 posts)When I eat out, I either use a disposable paper cup to drink from, or I order sealed bottled water. I NEVER drink from a glass or other reuseable container when I eat out.

(7,809 posts)How do straws prevent herpes?
I could go for using paper straws instead of plastic. I love using a straw.
You stick the straw up your ass and then ingest the beverage. You won't get those embarrassing cold sores.

Look it up.
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)You do not get herpes from sharing meals with those who are infected. While it might be theoretically possible to get it from a glass used by someone who is infected, there's exactly zero documented cases of this ever happening. The mechanism required for this to happen makes it extremely unlikely, kinda like sharing a toilet seat with someone who has an STD. It's a lot more of an urban myth than reality.

(10,572 posts)Can herpes be spread through sharing drinks and meals? Does a reoccuring painless rough patch on the lip an indicator of herpes?
No, you cant get herpes from sharing drinks and meals.
Herpes is spread by touching, kissing, and sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It can be passed from one partner to another and from one part of the body to another. Brief skin-to-skin contact is all thats needed to pass the virus. Because herpes may have no symptoms for years, sometimes it is very difficult to know who passed it to whom.
Although its rare, genital herpes can also be spread from a pregnant woman to her baby during vaginal birth.

It's only the plastic that has to go.

(34,069 posts)I have a few friends with cerebral palsy. They would bite through paper, shatter teeth on metal, burn themselves on steel straws drinking hot beverages, not to mention making it more likely they would spill the beverage and burn themselves directly, or injure themselves on any rigid straw.
Absolute bans will add to the challenges that individuals with physical disabilities already face in attempting to do the things the rest of us take for granted - like eating out occasionally.
It's not always about being selfish or ignorant.
silverweb
(16,402 posts)It's common for "loopholes" to be inserted in a bill for such exceptions.
Ms. Toad
(34,069 posts)most places considering bans are not inserting the loopholes, and when it is individual businesses making the decision - they wouldn't be required to provide plastic straws (not to mention that it is a monumental task to locate and lobby each individual business.)
Which means one more thing poeple with physical disabilities who need this particular accommodation will need to plan for in advance of an outing most of us take for granted.
And there is a fair amount of demonization of anyone who uses plastic straws (as selfish, not caring about the planet, petty, etc.). Just read through this thread - or any other thread on the issue.

(3,014 posts)I know people with disabilities are not on the radar of do-gooders but a few lawsuits will fix things.

(3,014 posts)Re-usable straws aren't an option for those with compromised immune systems because they often cannot get them clean.
Steel isn't an option for anyone with tremors. Paper and bamboo can become choking hazards.
I get that no one wants to actually do anything useful to help the environment and just wants to go for the easy kills like plastic straws, but it actually impacts a lot of disable people and they actually do fucking matter regardless what a lot of environmentalists think.

(32,634 posts)... and I'm still using them. There's no reason they can't be rinsed out and re-used, which I do on a daily basis.
I carry a few spare straws in my pocketbook (it's easier to do if you're a woman) and I am never without my own straw. Another thing is that nobody else uses them so I'm only coming in contact with my own germs, if any. The straws don't need to be sterilized after use, just rinsed out and allowed to dry. These are coffee straws I'm talking about, the kind for hot beverages, but they also work for cold drinks in a pinch.

Diseases can still be passed along, if the straws are shared for drinking or snorting. Be careful out there.

Many more coming.
