This is what it's like for a black business owner in a gentrifying SF neighborhood: Racist graffiti and calls to the police for unlocking your own store.

Welcome to the neighborhood; we're not all racist shitheads or developer eviction lawyers. I'll be stopping in.

(6,930 posts)And a duer recently tried to school me on how progressive CA was versus the south.
She knows who she is.

(6,930 posts)here about the south. All the while, these same posters ignore what is happening (sadly) in the whole country.
Thank you for your post. You seem like a good person from what I have read. You are not one who attacks and gets ugly here. I hate that kind of thing. I appreciate that most duers are not that way.

(149,615 posts)I must admit I felt a flash of anger at your post, but I realized that being angry in return wouldn't do any good. So I tempered my remarks.
I'm so glad I did!

(90,681 posts)It gets my goat when know-nothings want to break up our biggest state because the Senate would supposedly get 6 Democratic Senators. Likewise when the same know-nothings chastise us for not running Bernie Sanders clones in every single district because all of California is obviously that progressive. I remind them that Dana Rohrabacher, Devin Nunes, and Darrell Issa are all from California.
Life is a work in progress, isn't it?

(63,221 posts)And this is San Francisco! One of the most liberal cities in the country! Has this always been happening or is it getting worse?
This man broke my heart, just watching and hearing him. Anyone who says racism doesn't exist anymore is full of shit.
I don't know what the answer is. More education and understanding, but in the meantime, I think we need more black police officers. A lot more. Because they will be less likely to harass or fire on someone simply because they are black.
I hope this man's business does well and he is no longer harassed by ignorant racists.

(33,643 posts)Than it is about actual 'hate' ... people there would act like this towards someone white they perceived as a threat to their 'investment' as well.
When it costs so f***ing much to live in a place, or own a business there, people start getting paranoid about anything ... a lot of people are over-leveraged and utterly dependent on their prop values not tanking.
I think that was Bar-B-Que Becky's deal as well. I'd bet if that was a bunch of hillbilly-looking dudes grilling by the lake, she'd have done the same shit.
They're like 'hair-trigger' NIMBY's in the Bay, and it can be ANYthing they perceive as 'de-valuing' the neighborhood, man.
Not saying it's 'right', not at all. Hell, no, in fact.
But it's less based on real hate/racism (IN MOST CASES) and more on greed & paranoia.
This is my hood, I know it pretty well.
That all being said, it's DEFINITELY not racism free, by ANY stretch. It's just generally better than a lot of other places, and at least most of the racists there still also deeply care about the environment, women's rights/health, the safety net, immigrants rights, those types of things. And most generally aren't 'proud' of their racism by any stretch ...

(31,261 posts)rented in San Francisco for a couple of decades. The efforts to oust them were nasty. I tend to agree with you, it is more about money, but there is some racism in the mix. Highly educated couples that are pulling down $300,000 between the two minimum see a dreadlocked Black guy and instantly assume he does not belong, even if his store rent is outrageous.
I think the big cities are increasingly becoming places for the rich or ultra rich, wealthy and middleclass people of all races are being pushed to the far outer suburbs. But economic success does that, and I don't know how politicians can stop it, other than having cities become landlords, but that comes with it's own set of headaches.

(18,201 posts)i feel for the guy. i l have lived in both northern ca and sourthn ca. lived in a mostly white mormon comunity where police pick on white teenageres. ive seen all kinds of nonsense. i now live in a mostly red retiree community where many of the reds fled sanfransico and the bay area to get away from the minoritys and has always voted red. seen lots of fracking nonsense here too. a lot of it is also infered as stupid snide little "jokes or blatent rude remarks"

(90,681 posts)I tend to agree that Trumpism has empowered a lot of nasty folks -- who are now being caught on candid camera so we can all see what they're like.

I am saddened to see this here.

(5,066 posts)I have seen the changes in my old neighborhood with a lot of sadness. A lot of gentrification and a lot of suspected arson all within a 1/2 mile of that location. A lot of rent-controlled units magically disappeared. There are a lot of high-density units that have been constructed rubbing shoulders with 100+ year old structures. I think a lot of the previous posts are correct in suspecting greed as motivation (in whole or in part) for such crimes. There are a lot of poor people rubbing shoulders with high income professionals in this area, and the poor are losing.
