Im trying to save the trout in my pond from dying due to elevated water temperatures. I have a sprinkler going 24/7 into the pond. I also have a compressor for aeration for oxygen. Hoping for relief but I dont see any in the near future. High pressure has got us by the throat. No floating fish bodies...YET. This Northwest girl is happy with partly sunny skies and 70 degrees!

(23,340 posts)here on the east coast it has been raining for a week. We were having a drought, and now we are having up to a foot of rain.

(205,320 posts)And this is a fairly new area so that doesn't happen often, the last time was in 2011 during Hurricane Irene. Tonight's outage didn't last long, but I'm hoping that other areas are as lucky. There have been times recently when some areas have been out for a few days.

(7,768 posts)Curious about your "all your damn rain" comment, I did a search to get exact numbers!
I live in a relatively unique, low rainfall area of Washington State due to geographic features.
Primarily because of being in the lee of the Olympic Mountain Range, there is a significant "rain shadow" effect.
Where I live gets an annual average of 24" of rain and 4" of snow. Besides referred to as "The Rain Shadow", this small area is also dubbed "The Banana Belt"! lol
Good luck to you and may the water spigot soon be turned off!

(66,328 posts)I was speaking with a colleague about the heat this morning. We both agreed we couldn't wait for gray skies, cool winds, and pouring rain.
I commented: "There's something wrong with both of us, you know..."
I would have though things would be a little better out there on the islands, but I guess not.
PearliePoo2
(7,768 posts)Usually we get a sea breeze here in the Islands but its perfectly still right now. I can occasionally smell smoke. I think its drifting up from Mason County. A bunch of suspicious fires there last week.

(15,805 posts)Why can't trout withstand 70 degrees?
It's 107 here today. There's a small lake down the road where my DH sometimes goes to fish in the mornings and its stocked with trout that seem to manage the heat.

(14,856 posts)Also, the OP didn't say it's 70 degrees there, she said she likes the temperature to be 70 degrees. Clearly it's much hotter than that there now.

(19,236 posts)Amazing tech: it will cool just like an AC in summer, but come spring and fall I tap a button and it switches to pulling and condensing heat from the air!
It can heat my whole house down to 0F, below which I have both propane and a wood stove to heat with.
My utility company gave be a fat rebate and an off-peak meter for installing it, so it will save me thousands over it's 20-yr lifespan.

(6,640 posts)But in PNW we do not have air conditioners all over the place and few basements to cool off in. Our house has a cool basement but the majority of houses here are built without basements below ground level. IN other Word HOT.

As for water temperatures, trout prefer water in the high 50s or lower 60s. They're pretty much belly up at 77F.
As the temperature rises, trout will go down to the bottom of the pond or lake where the water is colder.
My pond is pretty shallow so there's not much relief for them. It could be that the lake your DH fishes in has significant depth and that's where they will hang out in the heat.
lapfog_1
(29,199 posts)consider using ground loop cooling system next to your pond.
I'd use a coil of copper tubing buried 4 to 6 feet deep (depending on average ambient summer temperatures under that much soil).
You don't want a large diameter tube or high rate of flow... just enough to give the pond water a chance to cool off under ground.
depends on the size of your fish pond too.
Also, how much shade can you create over the pond surface... outdoor patio umbrellas or a pool shade can provide some relief to the sun for the fish plus keep the water a bit colder. The only drawback is the amount of manual labor to raise and lower during wind events.

(7,768 posts)I'll look into it!

(33,327 posts)Highs in the 80s, low 60s at night, no humidity, no fires. It wasn't even 70 in Downtown Seattle at noon today. 68.
FFS, we have the best Summer weather on Earth. Particularly this year.
Good luck with your fish pond.

This is yet another year with above average heat. And for extended times.
Yes, its not as hot as other places, but far fewer of us have air conditioning.

(41,960 posts)I agree we have the best summers in the country but we could use a good rain and about ten degrees off. It's supposed to break records this weekend.

(41,960 posts)I bitch about the rain a lot so I don't hate the heat per se but the difference is disturbing. At the same time, we seem to be the most comfortable place in the country for the most part. My water bill is going to be nuts this month as I try to keep things alive though.

(7,768 posts)this spring I put in 200 baby Rainbow trout that were 5 to 7 inches. Right now I occasionally see a fish rise to take an insect. Thats good. Fingers crossed here! Hoping that the sprinkler introduces enough cool water to keep the pond from lethal warm water temperatures.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)Have you considered putting several of the fountain type water aerators in it? The action of them cools the water in summer. You will need an electrician to help design the power feed to the pump. I assume that your pond does not freeze over during the winter.
PearliePoo2
(7,768 posts)The aeration keeps an ice free circle! This is a nice ice free zone for ducks!

(1,706 posts)(well, okay, the cold and snowy winters too). But I kind of have to smile: tomorrow's predicted high in Eugene - 97. Here in NE Iowa - 74. I do note that it's less humid in Eugene than here. But, yeah, that heat isn't fun when you're not used to it. And I hope the heat doesn't lead to forest fires in the fall, like last year.

(11,457 posts)and with air I can handle that, don't like it but can handle that, what I can't handle is being stuck in the house because I have the worst air quality in the whole nation right now!
I bought better masks for when I have to go out, but my poor golden retriever is not getting enough exercise. They need to make a indoor area for dogs besides classes where they don't get to run. I throw the ball down the hall but that doesn't do much. We have reservations starting next Wed for a week on the coast can't wait!
