General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsCNN - I've had enough of the weepy grandfather who's kids were killed in the fire!!!
How much more will CNN exploit this story?
We had enough of it over the weekend - and here comes Camerota to fire it back up.
ENOUGH! We get it!
(I'll admit - I think A. Camerota SUCKS - bring back CC!)

(4,835 posts)My freaking sensitivity is worn out from the 20 times I had to see this segment over the weekend.

(4,835 posts)This happened 3 days ago and was covered over and over...mostly by way of a horrific live interview with the grandfather.
No need for a fresh live interview...gratuitous.

(4,835 posts)The first one pretty much told the story.
Do you really feel better listening to a man tell a story of listening to his grandson die?
Reporting it is bad enough...do you want to see the body?

(5,737 posts)Turn your TV back to Comedy Central or Nick, Jr. Compassion is one thing you know nothing about.

(182,826 posts)That was horrible TV.
hexola
(4,835 posts)The reporter on-the-scene who encountered this fellow was not wrong to do the story...but he said it was the hardest interview he's ever done.
I guess A Camerota thought that sounded nice - so she got them on again for a little more. That's the exploitative part...not cool.

(182,826 posts)She diverted into being about the lack of evacuation orders.
He couldn't have done anything. I can't imagine but I can empathize where he is. Seems like a stand-up good guy and his wife helped to bring it back to another discussion.
There was no need for that interview. They have much more important things to deal with right now.

(23,340 posts)Watching too much cable news is not good for you, as it is highly repetitive. They generally beat real stories and non-stories and minor controversies into the ground.

(4,835 posts)on live TV...once was enough - they got their sound bites.
I guess Camerota wanted to have live sad with them for her show...lame
I don't even watch TV news AT ALL and I keep tripping over this story. It was on radio and in the paper. The FIRST time I ran across it I turned it down thinking it was too exploitive. The next day it was on the radio again. Then in the paper complete with pictures of the whole family. Let this poor man in peace or some family member please rescue him. ENOUGH!

(29,718 posts)I'm so sorry for all the people and animals and the forest. I just won't watch the exploitation of grief.
hexola
(4,835 posts)Seems we generally don't do that...
Don't think Im splitting hairs here...

(20,411 posts)is it too much to ask that you make use of those modern innovations?
"we"?????
RobinA
(9,893 posts)that someone objecting has to watch it. I turned my radio off the first time I heard this story, but - newsflash - that doesn't mean it stops happening. The problem is that the news is exploiting the situation, a human being facing a tragedy. Some people think it's fairly barbaric to feature crying Grandpops who just lost their families as ratings getters. The fire is the news, not upset family members.
DrDan
(20,411 posts)I am sorry your radio listening was interrupted. You did the right thing by turning it off. But I am not sure why you would be at all concerned that it was rebroadcast if your radio was off . . . but . . . I guess you were/are.
cold, insensitive, callous - those words come to mind.

(1,622 posts)...when CNN repeatedly played footage of the poor woman who lost 11 members of her family in that duck boat disaster a few weeks ago?
I don't remember you posting your outrage about it...
hexola
(4,835 posts)When it comes to the duck boat - CNN had the one live event - that looked like a press conference or something...not something CNN had a hand in - they just covered it.
And no - that woman was surprisingly calm describing her last moments with her children - not as outrageous.
The issue here is - after repeatedly airing this horrific segment with the grandfather describing listening to his grandson die on his cell phone.
CNN - then makes sure they get the grandfather on live TV AGAIN this morning - so A. Camerota can have her moment of grief with them...shameful and unnecessary to cover this tragedy.

(9,893 posts)permutations of this story is empathy? I missed that somehow. To me, empathy would be turning off the friggin' camera.
Trust Buster
(7,299 posts)Coverage. CNN has the right to turn on their cameras whenever they want. They dont need to seek your permission. You have the right to watch or turn the channel. #EMPATHY
RobinA
(9,893 posts)I argued that CNN didn't have the right to turn on their cameras. Having the right to do something and said something being the right thing to do are two totally different things. In fact, this discussion hasn't mentioned rights at all. It started with the OP disliking the media's constant badgering of this man and milking his grief. He or she was responded to by spurious comments about his or her level of empathy and concern. I was simply chiming in with my agreement with the OP and my lack of understanding as to how feeling that grieving people should not be badgered by the news media was showing a lack of empathy.
Argumentum ad populum, pfffft. A fallacy.
hexola
(4,835 posts)I was empathetic the first time 3 days ago - after that, its just too much to listen to over and over.
And - this morning's live spot was totally unnecessary.

(42,334 posts)BTW, interviews with the "weepy grandfather" who listened to his grandchildren and wife as they died, have been on CBS and, I assume, other news programs as well.
