Manafort not only knows what happened in the 2016 campaign but he knows an awful lot about the Russians in Ukraine etc and what they've been up to. Putin and the Oligarchs do not want Manafort spilling the beans, so are working on get him freed. Manafort is supposed to be broke, yet someone is funding his high powered lawyers - who ?

What if Putin has told Trump to let this play out and then pardon/commute him, and that's why Manafort appears in this car crash trial not to be flipping. Trump is playing it up that Manafort has been badly treated, setting the scene for him to intervene later.
