Hmm...O'Connor v Balderson District. that's not gerrymandered at all, is it??? (Original Post) Roland99 Aug 2018 OP
Districts should be drawn by county roughly or just squared off like graph paper. Done. Dems win. Crutchez_CuiBono Aug 2018 #1

Wish it did, but population density differs so greatly that pure geography just won't create equal representation.

Now, there no reason for a U shaped district like this one. Or some of the barbell or lollipop shaped versions we've probably all seen maps of.

But, thinking of here in IL, there is no way a grid section of SE illinois would be the same as SW (nearing St Louis) and nothing like west central and especially not like NE Illinois.

The districts could be shaped reasonably, but they would all have to be different sizes otherwise some elected officials would be representing 3x the people as others.

Very little of Franklin County is in the district and not the main part of Columbus. It's crazy.

Notice how they ONLY included Dublin, Upper Arlington, and New Albany (the three richest suburbs of Columbus), and then made sure to include ALL of Licking County, Morrow County, and Delaware County (hillbillies and racists).

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This district is so heavily gerrymandered that it's a minor miracle a Democrat even came CLOSE to winning.

From here (at the very bottom) - http://www.wikiwand.com/en/Ohio%27s_12th_congressional_district

So it is obvious what they did. Basically the same thing that happened here in PA that was recently (and finally) tossed out.

The Two Major Issues of voting will be addressed when the common, everyday man sees what is happening.

1. Who counts the votes and how do they do it?

2. Who gets to vote for which candidates, in which districts and who doesn't.

Then the crazy Senate issue will be addressed. How is it that a Californian has 2 senators representing about 35 million while a guy in Wyoming has his two senators representing about 1 million? And these are states formed out of whole cloth, not some historical "Original 13 colony".

The population of WY is just barely over half of that (579K).

In fact, AK & MT have more people than WY!!

By 2030 roughly 70% of the population will be voting for 36 senators and 30% of the population will be voting for 64 senators. How the fuck is that close to fair or democratic?

There's little hope for change on this, though...

Gerrymandering, voter suppression, Russia and the infotainment industry are all ones that can be tackled with enough effort.

The massive overrepresentation of rural America is a structural barrier that is very difficult to address.

The concentration of Democrats in urban areas also presents a challenge for addressing gerrymandering. We need an impartial robot to draw the lines.

Republicans can't win without fixing the game and they do it with gerrymandering, voter suppression, and hackable electronic voting machines. It's so damn obvious. They have gotten away with it because so many people don't vote.

You holler and scream and try to rationalize with people and unless they feel their lives being changed, they just don't make the effort to participate.

You add that to the latent racism that the orange one enabled mobilizing all the bigots and angry white people coming out to vote and we end up with the disaster that we have where this country is perched on the abyss of fascism.

We are facing a real disaster come November if people don't come out and vote Democratic to regain at least the House.
