A Vermont man whose gun activism got him a write-up by Fox News has been arrested for pointing a gun at a black woman while yelling racial slurs — an act that got him charged with a hate crime.

The Burlington Free Press reported that 23-year-old Sheldon Rheaume, a resident of Essex, VT, was jailed without bond early Tuesday morning after on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, reckless endangerment and hate-motivated disorderly conduct.


Police said that around 3:30 AM on Tuesday, Rheaume went into a gas station and began directing racial slurs at the woman seated behind the counter. He allegedly told her she was “lazy” and “needed to get to work” before going outside and using more slurs against her while complaining to the woman’s coworker.

When the attendant exited the store, court papers claim, Rheaume took out a gun and said “I’ll handle you” to her. According to the Free Press report, the woman told police that the man waved the gun around in front of her face and pointed it at her as well.

6. Now that may have been a close call. Bullet proof vest and armed? I carry on occasion.

I'm in areas where certain wildlife consider me to be food several times a year, and I own a sideline business that has me carrying what is to me a large amount of cash. I don't have a bullet proof vest or assault weapons. I would wear the vest for any reason even if someone gave me one.

He was all talk when telling them to send anyone they wanted after him. Even with the vest, he allowed himself to be arrested. Does he go around like that hoping to provoke a confrontation? Was he planning on shooting up some place and chickened out?

A line I like to use on white wing gun nuts is, "those AR-15's aren't much use against the guvmint without their cousins and kids to hide behind!" If it comes right down to it, federal agents at some idiots door looking to confiscate their assault weapons, most are going to give it up, and there are not that many of them. A lot of the people that own those assault weapons, own more than one. Even fewer that would really shoot it out.

The closest I came to an incident was a couple years ago at Costco's gas pumps. Coming in I was putting along through the speed bumps and headed to the nearest open pump. This kid comes in the other way going way faster and tries to bluff me. If he hadn't wussed out and hit the brakes first, I would have, but he lost his little game of chicken! Old 81 Chevy pickup vs new little two door, I would hope so.

So then I get out and start to gas up and the guy is over a few pumps talking trash. I thought he was gonna come over and confront me. I pulled my handgun out from under the seat and set it on the seat. I thought it might be good to let him see that sitting right there if he wanted a problem!

I never tell anyone I'm carrying or that I have a permit. If anything happens, I want that to be a surprise.
