During the course of the meeting, Weidman brought up the issue of Agent Orange, an extremely notorious component of the U.S. herbicidal warfare on Vietnam. Weidman was imploring the president and his team to permit access to benefits for a broader number of vets who have said they were poisoned by Agent Orange.
Trump responded by saying, Thats taken care of, according to people in the room.
His reply puzzled the group.
Attendees began explaining to the president that the VA had not made enough progress on the issue at all, to which Trump responded by abruptly derailing the meeting and asking the attendees if Agent Orange was that stuff from that movie.
...
Source present at the time tell The Daily Beast that multiple peopleincluding Vietnam War veteranschimed in to inform the president that the Apocalypse Now set piece he was talking about showcased the U.S. military using napalm, not Agent Orange.
Trump refused to accept that he was mistaken and proceeded to say things like, no, I think its that stuff from that movie.
One clue belying the presidents insistence is that the famous Robert Duvall line from the scene in Apocalypse Now, I love the smell of napalm in the morning, is not I love the smell of Agent Orange in the morning.
He then went around the room polling attendees about if it was, in fact, napalm or Agent Orange in the famous scene from that movie, as the gatheringorganized to focus on important, sometimes life-or-death issues for veteransdescended into a pointless debate over Apocalypse Now that the president simply would not concede, despite all the available evidence.
Finally, Trump made eye contact again with Weidman and asked him if it was napalm or Agent Orange. The VVA co-founder assured Trump, as did several before him, that it was in fact napalm, and said that he didnt like the Coppola film and believed it to be a disservice to Vietnam War veterans.
According to two people in attendance, Trump then flippantly replied to the Vietnam vet, Well, I think you just didnt like the movie, before finally moving on.

(53,778 posts)Can't wait for SNL and Alec Baldwin get a hold of this.
It writes itself. Their writers won't even be needed for this skit.
But it would be a really bad comedy, a slapstick farce that would barely appeal to a ten year old. Really mean, stupid people just cannot be made to appear funny, no matter what color their skin or goofy their hair. Trump is an abomination and though some impersonations may come close to capturing his stupidity, they can't quite get the true ugliness of the man's soul. Alec Baldwin is almost endearing in comparison.

(24,412 posts)The scariest thing about this whole situation is not just that Trump is an ignorant doofus who doesn't know thing #1 about being POTUS and the GOP is oblivious/indifferent but also that we potentially have a President and an entire political party compromised by a foreign power and nobody knows exactly to what end and/or what that could literally mean for the future of American democracy.

He was and remains to be the classical petulant spoiled child. He has such a fragile ego that he is impossible to admit that he is wrong. This is a trait of people who a wrapped since of right and wrong. He is just like many dictators who have plagued mankind who have no conscience. This is what makes them so dangerous. They will do anything, lie, cheat, steal and even murder to win without any regard for their victims. They are totally abnormal and have no capacity for compassion for those they destroy and are able to justify even the most atrocious actions with the delusion that they were justified because they are being attack by the enemy. They are only fighting back against unfair condemnation. This is his signature trait, he blames his victims for his immoral actions. He is the thug who justifies a brutal rape with the delusion that the victim has provoked them and they were victimized. Trump repeats this same scenario over and over again. He is totally beyond reform.

He's an empty, shallow, narcissistic nothing held up by fake bone spurs and treachery.
He doesn't deserve to be in the same room with those vets.
If Trump thinks the issues with Agent Orange are "taken care of", he should skip golf for a couple days and go visit some VA hospitals. He'd find plenty of veterans poisoned by Agent Orange and deadly sick after begging for help for decades.
My beloved died from this shit. Agent Orange brain cancer, among others. You know, the kind Senator McCain is suffering from that Trump can't even bring himself to acknowledge. (31,261 posts)There is nothing funny about. I had a veteran older brother who fought in Vietnam and died from Agent Orange exposure, even as the government was trying to prove that it affected no one (although they paid for my brother's medical care). I know a vet that is younger than my brother would be if he was still alive, the younger vet fought in Vietnam and he has both physical and psychological issues that doctors that have treated him believe were caused by agent orange exposure, that vet also suffers from bouts of dementia and physical ailments like my brother did, although the effect on my brother was rapid because he fought in a Marine unit that often went into the jungle and was sprayed by planes that were defoliating the jungle to help expose enemy positions, my brother became bad off, but before he fell apart, he described a lot of what happened and what he witnessed there and about killing people, something that my mom said he would have never dreamed of before he got drafted.
What Trump did is not funny, it is brutally sad beyond measure. We have a monster as President now.

For the veterans of wars that are suffering, all of us need to do what we can to help them. We may not agree with the war they fought in, but they fought in good faith or because they were drafted and did not have connections that could have gotten them into softer roles, or allow them to repeatedly dodge like Trump did. Anyone that hear a socalled progressive say there is no difference between the modern republican and democratic parties need to forcefully remind that person that there is an enormous difference. Democrats care about people that are in need and trying to help solve the problems those people can't solve themselves, republicans don't.

(50,557 posts)Dear President, if that's what you are, Trump: Napalm is an incendiary agent. It smells like gasoline. Agent Orange is a herbicide. It smells like the weed killer aisle at Lowe's. When napalm lands on something it sets it on fire. When Agent Orange lands on something it sits there and kills it over a period of weeks. Colonel Kilgore was trying to kill enemy soldiers in the treeline, so he wouldn't have used Agent Orange. If you'd have gone to Vietnam you'd know this.
Anyway, this is Colonel Kilgore's speech after he napalmed the treeline:
I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed for twelve hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of them, not one stinkin' dink body.
But the smell! You know, that gasoline smell. The whole hill. It smelled like...victory.
(Kilgore becomes contemplative...) Someday, this war's gonna end.

(6,831 posts)It will come in the form of burn pits. All of the oil, chemicals, toxins, old armaments that were destroyed in the hundreds of open burn pits across Iraq, Afghanistran, and other places in the middle east. For weeks and months on end, our soldiers were exposed to the noxious fumes from these fires, breathing in and covered over by this lethal combination of pollutants and carcinogins.
Their claims are now already falling on deaf ears from DoD and the VA and if we allow it to happen, we are going to see history repeat itself. We can't just stand by. When you see grass-roots activism spread about forcing governmental agencies to confront the truth about burn pits, do what you can to help progress these issues to the highest levels.
Now that we know what government inaction, denial and complacency look like (regarding AO), let's try to assist the younger vets with all the help we can provide them in making their voices heard and getting their health complications evaluated (with medical science, in honesty and with facts at hand) and enable them to get the benefits they are going to need. And they are going to need our help.
We've been there. We know what denial looks like. It's our turn to reach out to them and give them the guidance we didn't get in time to make a difference in their lives.
