(7,299 posts)He had to hear the 1970 tapes of Nixon and Kissinger agreeing that they had to pull out of Viet Nam because the war was lost. McCain had to here Kissinger on those tapes agreeing with Nixon that they had to wait until after the 1972 campaign. McCain spent 2 more years in captivity because of a pure and selfish domestic political calculation.

(59,503 posts)there is emphasis that McCain was able to move past their differences on the war with John Kerry, but some comments suggest that he never actually understood why Kerry protested - though it goes to the core of who Kerry is.
Even before 1970, LBJ was close to a deal in 1968 when Kissinger and Nixon pushed South Vietnam to reject it saying they would get a better deal. The terms of the final agreement were essentially that of 1968. Tapes from the LBJ archives speak about this and the dilemma that LBJ faced. He opted not to speak of his knowledge before (or after) the election. In some ways, it puts Trump in context. Had Nixon NOT done this, there was a good chance that LBJ would have announced something on the war ending before the election. That election was close - many liberal antiwar people were angered that Humphrey got the nomination. The war was immensely unpopular (and Nixon had a "secret" plan to end it ), I suspect that we would have had a Prestident Humphrey. Humphrey was one of the more liberal, progressive people to run for President. The entire path of history would have been different.

(96 posts)Hasn't he lived in this country for like 60 years? He still sounds like he just arrived here. Does he think it makes him sound more educated or something?

(11,601 posts)My maternal grandparents emigrated from Germany in 1953 and became naturalized citizens in 1958. Grandpa died in 1988 and Grandma in 2004. They never lost their thick accents even though they spoke fluent English. The funny thing is, that as a child I didn't realize they had accents until a friend pointed it out. I just didn't notice it until that point.
