My anecdotal observations are that Texas is blue in almost all of the urban areas but the rural areas are holding us back.
If we can GOTV, Beto can win.
It also might surprise you that my employer is very progressive and inclusive despite what most think.
Dont give up on us yet. Go Beto!

I will be able to hold my head high again when I mention being born and raised in Texas.

(33,956 posts)If nothing else, the hatred of trumpian policy might unite the benchwarmers.
As in most places, the DEA clamping down on opioids is a big deal. Texas has a pretty large population of chronic pain sufferers. Beto wants legalization. That is looking good to those folks who are suffering from being cut off of their meds.

(3,344 posts)I expect, again, to be watching election night and hearing, once again, that our side did not turn up to vote while the old white racists showed up.

(112,161 posts)and can say that there was strong contingent of liberals there in the 1990s. Unfortunately, I think it has grown vastly more conservative after 20+ years of Republicans leading the state.
I suspect that there are other agencies that have large contingents of liberals like HHS and TCEQ, but the agriculture and TXDOT offices in the rural areas will have plenty of conservatives.
I'm planning on attending an organizational event for Beto in the following week at the junior college. It should be interesting to see who attends. The party chairman for this county died about a year ago so it will be interesting to see what occurs.

(2,195 posts)Many of the best jobs in Texas and other states are in State Governments.
Just because someone works there does not mean they are necessarily
of a particular political persuasion. Find out a lot on the internet and elsewhere.

(20,185 posts)Cruz cruised into the Senate with a 16% margin, but the Democratic candidate was an unknown with no political experience beyond the state legislature. And get this, Cruz only got 40% of the Latino vote. If Beto can GOTV, especially among Latinos and urban areas, he can win it all.

(10,828 posts)Beto O'Rourke is running a fantastic campaign, taking it to rock star levels. And Cruz is running scared. Why else would Cruz request the Trumpster campaign for him, the man who insulted his wife and smeared his father?
Smells like fear to me.
GOTV is the formula to winning this race. Keep it up, Texas.

(2,674 posts)GOTV is the make or break deal this year. There many, many rural counties in Texas, all pure red, while the urban areas and the Valley are blue. It has always been the problem that the Dems don't vote except in the Presidentials. Here in Dallas I noticed Beto signs in many yards but no Cruz signs. My daughter volunteers for the Democrats over in Arlington (Tarrant Count) and was told that the Cruz campaign didn't want to spend money for yards signs. Big mistake on the part of the Cruz faction - Yea!
I have fond memories about the 2006 election where so many local Republicans were voted out.

(42,770 posts)of Beto signs here. I am enthused.
Of course lots of what Austin KLBJ hosts call Facebook ..."Mombook" faithful here...and they are loving the propaganda out there. "Beto is using that name to trick Hispanics to vote for him."

We just need to get folks out. We can do this.
Im daring to believe.

(4,066 posts)The urban areas like Portland and Salem are the only reason Oregon is blue. Once you get outside these urban areas it is as red and conservative as TX.
You are absolutely correct. GOTV in the urban areas like we do in Oregon and overwhelm the ballot box with progressive votes!

(12,344 posts)The difference between red and blue states is the proportion of urban vs. rural dwellers. The south in particular has always been more rural than the rest of the country due to development patterns based on the old plantations.

(13,081 posts)The tweet that David Hogg is raising money to put in a billboard:
https://m.chron.com/news/houston-texas/texas/article/Donald-Trump-Ted-Cruz-old-Tweets-Beto-O-Rourke-TX-13197112.php
Id print them four to a page, cut them out, and spend every day taping them on power poles and left under windshields and on peoples front doors. A blue wave in Texas wont just be about GOTV for Democrats, IMO, it will be just as much about making sure Republicans know theres no reason for them to vote.
In fact, I worry that the blue wave talk will leave too many people overconfident like in 2016. Of the many reasons Clinton lost that one, I blame the Oh, the news says shes going to win so I dont need to bother voting crowd (and their horse-race media enablers) more than any other single factor. Im also just a worryart.

(4,450 posts)Not giving up on you at all! Or is it y'all at all? I dunno but hook 'em horns, or gig 'em, or whatever else (I am a college football fan and only really know about UT and A&M, not as much about UH, or TT, or TCU or Baylor or anyone else so forgive me on that)! But yes, go Beto! I've thrown him a few bucks and will do so again.

(4,079 posts)I live in Colorado now, but was born and raised in the Lone Star State. All of my family still live in Texas, and all are Beto supporters except for one crazy, old Aunt who keeps the TV tuned to Foxsnooze all day long. All the young 'uns, though, all my brothers, nieces and nephews are good Dems, and they vote. Always. I'm hopeful.
