This is what the Republican midterm election campaign will be about: The country will descend into darkness if you give the Democrats any power. Yes, you should worry.

Last week, in his meeting with evangelical leaders, Donald Trump unveiled what I expect will be his closing argument in this campaign, and yes, you should worry about it.
The argument is to link the idea of a Democratic victory to violence. Yes, its grotesque and insane, and insanely irresponsible, and all kinds of things. But it also might work.
Democrats should not underestimate thisshould not underestimate, that is, the possibility that this midterm might not follow the normal script. If you havent been worrying too much about this, Id advise you add it to your list.
Heres the history. Usually in midterm elections with a presidents approval ratings underwater, his supporters are dispirited, and the other side is energized. And thats what polls and most of the results so far are telling us.
But thats also an atmosphere in which most incumbent presidents stay pretty quiet. By tradition, a president who knows his party is going to get pasted in the midterms doesnt campaign, because doing so is seen as costing him political capitalthe more hes out on the stump, the more the losses can be hung around his neck, and the lamer his duckery. Hence, George W. Bush in 2006 and Barack Obama in 2010 kept low profiles as their parties House majorities handed the keys to the other side. They played defense.

(5,931 posts)If the propagandist can create a sense of mortal fear in his listeners - if he can make them feel as though their lives are in danger - then he has them in the palm of his hand.
There is no deeper or stronger instinct in the psyche than the survival instinct. The propagandist aims to trigger that instinct, and harness its power for his own ends.
Sure, it's absurd for anyone to think violent, Antifa-ish types are coming to harm them. It doesn't matter that's it's absurd, as long as the propagandist is able to get the listener to envision it.
It works. Not just on Deplorables, but on your Aunt Sally and Uncle George, and that nice retired schoolteacher who lives next door. And the OP is spot on. They'll be pushing this tactic hard - and it really is a cause for concern.
