Republicans in Kansas further splintered Tuesday as the last moderate member of the party to hold the governors office in Kansas endorsed a Democrat for governor over Kris Kobach, the GOP nominee.
In a statement, former Kansas governor Bill Graves said he planned to support Sen. Laura Kelly in the November election. Kelly is running against Kobach and independent Greg Orman.
Laura Kelly is the only Democrat I have ever endorsed for public office, Graves said in the statement. And the reason Im doing that now is because I believe so much is at stake in the state of Kansas. I have known Laura for over thirty years. She has all the qualities and all the capabilities that we are looking for to lead the state during this difficult time and to reestablish the state to what it once was.
Graves endorsement is the most prominent GOP sign of support Kelly has received this election cycle. Officials with the Orman and Kobach campaigns did not immediately comment, as well as the Kansas GOP.

(31,261 posts)But Cop and Firefighter unions seldom back democrats, even when the democrat has an excellent record of working for their interests. The rank and file may be different, but my guess is the majority are perfectly ok with their union endorsing republicans without much thought about their best interests. Republicans in Kansas have viciously attacked public employee unions and cut funding for social services and schools, but two areas that see no cuts are cop payrolls and firefighter payrolls, but that will change once republicans remove all other resistance to their policies.
