CINCINNATI -- A usually busy Fountain Square was empty Thursday afternoon, except for a single piece of yellow tape. Down the street, a woman screamed and sobbed into the arms of a Cincinnati police officer.
About an hour earlier, a Fifth Third Bank employee said he saw a gunman dressed in business attire walk into the lobby and spray bullets at innocent people. The employee saw the gunman as he exited a lobby elevator. He jumped back inside, narrowly avoiding a hail of bullets -- he heard them strike the elevator door when it closed.
Three to four Cincinnati police officers exchanged fire with the gunman, Chief Eliot Isaac said. One of the officers shot and killed the gunman, Mayor John Cranley said.

Very close to home here. Initial reports said the shooting range also included a local bakery/coffee shop right on the square...the one my daughter stops by once and a while on the way to work. Not always and not even often but when the mood hits her.
Not this morning - but it took me 3-4 minutes to know that for sure. Took me a few hours to adrenaline down from that.
After having that knowledge I tuned out completely from the day of news on the topic.
But...as much as I wish it weren't true, we're not a major metro area (so we don't help ratings much) and 4-5 people shot just doesn't make the news. It is a sad commentary on the times but these lives got washed out by an anonymous op-ed and an asshat nominee.

(6,358 posts)5. Really ? I was here. I didn't see you ???
I came here in '79 for a 3 year corporate job and, with about a decade of assignments in other cities, it's been home ever since. Great place to raise a family. Food scene (and craft beer scene) is sinfully good.
But, it's a city with a strong conservative streak. Good to live in one of the near burbs that's 65+% blue but there's A LOT of red around here.
Come back again and enjoy the city - some things will be just as you left them !

Of course since I was running from post- Hurricane Gilbert, I was very receptive to food
Can't believe it's been 30 years.

Staying at the Westin right on Fountain Square. I'm sure things will be back to normal by then but it's still pretty scary.
