The Democrats might have scored some point and dinged Kavanaugh. The strategy trying to get a GOPPER to flip with release of the documents is not likely to win.

(14,565 posts)It's the reason I haven't watched, except the highlights clips.
I understand the big picture and am not going to kid myself that any points scored by Democrats or wobbles by Kavanuagh are going to change votes from Murkowski or Collins or anyone else.
It's a numbers game and we are short

(16,423 posts)I guess, their strategy is to bring up all the dirt they possibly can now, before the Republicans confirm him.
Then the Democrats have effectively made an albatross out of Kavanaugh, because he will be a liability for the GOP at the polls for the next decades:
* Trump means that the Democrats can trash-talk the GOP as a party of amoral grifters, tyrant-coddlers and racists.
* Kavanaugh means that the Democrats can trash-talk the GOP as the party who abused the SCOTUS confirmation-process TWICE and who confirmed a racist conspiracy-theorist who was associate to theft of documents and lied under oath about it.
If Kavanaugh gets confirmed, the GOP will lose a few percentage-points in all elections of the decades to come.

(37,160 posts)First and foremost, they are establishing grounds for impeaching him at a time when that becomes a feasible option. That he lied in testimony to congressional al committees on multiple occasions, that the Republicans knew it and tried to hide the documentation, their ramming through the process to get him on the SC no matter what happens to their president, all establish the fundamental illegitimacy of this process and his being on the Supreme Court. It won't just be partisan sour grapes.
Second, it's always possible he'll chicken out under the public scrutiny. Not likely, but it has happened before.
Third, something unexpected may develop that might actually break up the Republican's Soviet Politburo-like lockstep voting. Again, unlikely, but then, Komrade Kaos is occupying the White House.
