An elderly woman caused her local police station to be evacuated when she turned up packing a live grenade unaware it was still a live explosive. It was the city of Leverkusens Opladen police station where the woman went to ask officers for help in disposing of what she thought was an old military relic. She held the explosive in her hand and told officials her husband had brought it as a keepsake weapon from the front decades ago, but after his death she no longer wanted to display it in her house.
Despite the womans casual manner, police decided to handle the object, which looked like a Soviet-made frag grenade from the war, with caution and quickly discovered they were right to do so. The ordnance, although old, was unexploded, triggering an immediate alarm to all staff. The station quickly called in a bomb disposal squad, and an explosives team safely discharged the wartime explosive. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/90-year-old-woman-brings-live-wwii-grenade-to-police/ar-BBMZMjM

(31,261 posts)Likely explain why we are a bit messed up about the perils of war. No one had to hide out in bomb shelters or have invading armies nearing town. The Civil War was too long ago, no one is alive that experienced it.

(572 posts)selling an antique metal pestle with a wooden handle. It was actually a Chinese hand grenade with a screw cap on the end of the wooden shaft which you unscrewed and pull a cord to light the fuse. Apparently the pestle had been well used...

The lady is lucky.
