Nike Knows Its Customers -- And They Aren't Trump Voters

Nike didn’t wait for Super Bowl LIII to debut its most powerful — and controversial — commercial. Its most recent ad campaign has already sparked outrage, with some consumers setting their sneakers on fire and posting pictures on social media sites.

The cause of the combustion is the athlete at the center of the campaign: former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, best known for starting the quiet sideline protest of dropping to one knee during the singing of the national anthem before the start of the game. He has said that he wanted to draw attention to continuing social injustice, including police shootings of unarmed black men.

Kaepernick was virtually expelled from the game for his protests, starting during the 2016 season. After his contract with the San Francisco 49ers expired, he was not offered a spot by any other team even though his athletic ability is unquestioned. On Monday, Kaepernick introduced the new ad campaign by tweeting a photo of himself with this tagline underneath: “Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything.”

Brilliant.

Unlike Kaepernick, Nike didn’t do this because the company’s officers are especially brave or “woke.” While its stock was down a bit right after the announcement of Kaepernick’s role, most financial analysts expect that the sports apparel company’s bottom line will benefit from its association with him.

Big multi-national corporations don't waste market share over social issues.

Trumplodytes are in the minority. Always remember that. Trumplodytes are in the minority. Nike knows this is true with respect to markets, we should remember that with respect to voting. If we get out and vote we will overwhelm the assholes.

Nike will sell a lot more shoes doing this than kowtowing to RW racist extremists. No, I don't think it has a lot to do with social justice. It's about the bottom line. One other thing to remember is that Nike is multi-national. Poking a finger in the eye of Trump and his followers will play well in markets in Europe and Asia as well.

Who would have thought that individuals who are concerned about police mistreatment of minorities would shower money down on a multinational company that has preyed on desperate workers in foreign countries to boost their profits ?

That is the reason he left San Francisco; he wasn't expelled because of the protests

the underqualified Knute Buehler, who will probably cut his taxes.

Yay Nike for supporting Kaepernick, but boo Knight for supporting Buehler.
