Gets silly. Had a minister who was like this--knew all the "secret knowledge" about what symbols "really" meant, unlike all the stupids around him. Things like what neckties actually represented, or crosses, or the *real* meaning behind the ATT logo. He'd sit for hours looking at print ads to find sexual innuendo when the entire "subliminals in ads" business was all the craze among the crazies. I once asked him why he looked at ads so long to find sexual context when he was married or there was a bookshop that would make the job easier. He was, of course, pissed. He was my #2 boss. (My #1 boss thought him crazy at times, too.)

That symbols were just things that we humans give meaning to, and different humans can decide things differently, was far, far beyond him. (I don't think he could ever figure out how what sounds like "see" could be a verb denoting sight in English, the word for 'yes' in Spanish, the word for 'if' in Spanish and French, 'yourself' in Serbian or "you are" in Czech. Bad at languages, for him "see" only had the One True Meaning it has in English. Which created problems when he had to look up what the "Holy See" was and found that "see" there means "seat", hence a diocese or archdiocese. He had to reason it's where you went to see the Pope, hence "Holy See.&quot
