"I think I might be a newly hatched Democrat" says poster on Twitter

I stumbled on this thread on Twitter. Poster after poster explaining that they were leaving the GOP. I have never seen such a mass exodus. They all seemed a bit dazed. I don't recall this sort of reaction during the Bush years.

Among the 1000 comments:

*Being 'independent' is basically sitting on the fence, and is what landed us with Trump, and is what will allow him to squeak back in for a second term.

*I'm in exactly the same boat my friend. I've historically preferred the independent route but there is no way in hell I will ever associate with the @GOP after this complete disaster we have on our hands while the fools sit on their thumbs doing nothing to restore balance!

*After just watching Obama's speech, I'm with you as well!

*Republican all my life and this week, i defected

*My mom defected too

*Actually I’m staying independent but will clearly vote DEM through 2020!

* I dropped my 'I' label this year and switched to Dem. I want it perfectly clear where I stand.

*Former independent here. I've found openness, welcome & #commonground w/ #Democrats.

*I was an Independent before the Trump Travesty and GOP complete capitulation..now I consider myself a moderate Dem.

*I’ve been an Independent all my life and voted based on character and issues. I’ve totally morphed into a Democrat these past 2 years. My husband’s a Republican but vows never to vote Rep. again, even if one is running for dog catcher!

*I’ve always considered myself a swing voter. I vote who I think is the best candidate. I will now NEVER, EVER vote for a Republican again!

*I'm ex-gop too......voters with no home but we have to do what is right for our Country. You are correct....if we split the vote we will be in hell for 6 more years

*Always been an Independent. I’m ready for the blue wave.

*Yup...56 year conservative now lives, appreciates integrity of Democrats. I’m ALL in

*I went from 30 year republican to independent summer 2016. Walk in change to Democrat on primary day. Surprised by the relief. Fence sitting means your stuck in grief.

* I was former GOP to the point where I once held a GOP gubanatorial fundraiser at my home...now a registered Dem.

*Same here, being an independent means that sometimes we vote for Republicans, and I just can't imagine doing that anymore. I AM NOW A DEMOCRAT.

*I hatched quite some time ago....I left the GOP when it was clear that the party was being over run by the Jesus Jihadists and the Ammosexuals...Citizens United was the final nail in the coffin

*There is nothing more adorable than a newborn Dem. Welcome.

For most of my life (I'm now 67) I was an independent. My first election in which was old enough to vote was 1972 and I totally hated Nixon for all the obvious reasons. Of course I voted for McGovern in '72 but I remained independent for many years.

Many of you guys on DU probably won't understand this, but I grew up in the Midwest in a proudly Republican family. I hated Nixon and most of the Republicans of course, but I always thought that sooner or later another Eisenhower would come along. Or somebody that I would at least consider voting for. It never happened. I voted in every election from '72 on, and there was never a GOP candidate that I could vote for. Maybe if Nelson Rockefeller or John Heinz had lived long enough to run for POTUS ...

Anyway I was clearly a Democrat all those years and just never bothered to register in the Democratic Party. Finally in 2008 I was determined to vote for Hillary Clinton. But I would only have the chance to do that in the primary, and it meant I'd be joining the party finally. Honestly I never regretted that decision. I hope these Facebook Independents really do join our Party, but even if they don't it's great that they're tuning out the GOP right-wing noise. That's the first big step!

... in addition, the Dems haven't all been perfect. Until 1968 there were good and bad candidates in both parties. Since then, I can truthfully say that every good person/thing/idea has come from the Democrats.

So why didn't I join earlier? I don't know except that I finally woke up in 2008. Just like these people are finally waking up right now.

It used to be that the Republican Party put up candidates who had redeeming qualities. Even Nixon. And then along came Reagan.

Our side lost the thread when we responded by thinking we had to water down our message.
