Ms. Franklin is a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where she studied music composition. She emphasized, during the competition, that “there is a 20 percent higher graduation rate at schools where music is a part of the curriculum.”

Schools need music and art. The students need music and art. They are truly the less for not having the opportunity.

whether aspiring to be a maestro or rocket scientist. That's a proven fact.

It's truly a shame that capitalism does not recognize its value in our society, but instead brushes the arts aside as a waste of time AND something to be enjoyed and accomplished only by the wealthy.

and the local CMS feeder school for the arts in Charlotte is in my neighborhood. They do great things at the NW School and though I haven't visited the UNC Arts School since it entered the UNC system, I continue to be impressed with their students even standing out in a city with Wake and WSSU.

Today (Sunday) has been a good day! #RaiseUp, #KeepPounding

which is to say all the arts as they are woven into film, web, journalism, product design, cooking and fashion.

Until we start to teach full, contemporary art and media literacy we will be a culturally impoverished country and live in ugly houses, ugly towns and ugly clothes. The only excitement will come from drugs and police lights amped up to fill in the gaps in our souls.

She said that she was from Michigan (can't remember exact words) where they are 38% water and have none to drink. (Something like that)

Loved Miss NY!

This excites me beyond all measure! I live 2 blocks from that school, and she probably walked past my house .....
My son and grandson are alumni there. I was the first house mother at age 22 when the school was founded. I’m ecstatic - the students win prizes and accolades about so much world wide and nation wide - but this is a first about their physical beauty which I get to see when I go to the graduation ceremonies and see them walk across the stage.

Just like our school teachers that get to see their students grow up and achieve great things, yet the teachers rarely get recognized.

So, like many professions and avocations, we take our silent pleasure in playing our small part.....
