Taliban to open liaison office in Qatar

Afghanistan's Taliban insurgent group says it has reached a basic agreement with Qatar to open a liaison office in the Gulf state to promote peace talks.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Taliban said it had agreed with the Qatari and US governments to establish the office to discuss political resolutions for peace with the international community.
The administration of US President Barack Obama has conducted behind-the-scenes negotiations with the Taliban as it hopes to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan.
