(102,272 posts)He was never the same when he was released and though I long since lost track of that friend, she told me what he experienced. He only spoke of it once, just once, after a few too many drinks with some former combat veterans and died a couple years later of an "accidental" motorcycle wreck.
I have to admire anyone who went through what McCain did. Absolutely. Politics don't come into play. NEVER.

As a Republican politician he never did a damn thing that impressed me and I have no reason to admire him. Again YMMV

One of my heroes this year would be Senator Merkley for putting the family separations at our border on the map.

I think I can think of a couple of progressives that are more "heroes" than those two.
