I don't get all the hatred towards Venezuela on DU and among most mainstream Democrats. Chavez wrested control of that country away from the extreme right-wing and used the money from the nationalized oil companies to better the lives of millions of impoverished Venezuelans. He was targeted for a coup inspired by Washington and led by the oligarchs that opposed him. The fall in oil prices has his the government and people hard, but at least they were trying to improve the lives of the poor.

Why so many DU'ers consider Maduro a dictator and constantly rail against him is beyond me. There are a helluva lot worse dictators in the world WAY more repressive than he is. Every day I read something on DU about how awful things are in Venezuela but rarely hear a peep about Saudi Arabia or Egypt, or Russia for that matter. I'm pretty sure the US only considers a government a dictatorship if it's socialist.
