Matt Bai: My fear about Kavanaugh isnt that hes a sexual predator; barring new revelations, theres no evidence to suggest he is.
My fear is that his experiences as a partying teenager didnt actually teach him a hell of a lot about fallibility or shame. He seems not to have emerged with much appreciation for the gray areas in which most larger truths reside.
A Supreme Court justice doesnt need to be a perfect person, or to have led an unfailingly exemplary life. None of us can say that. But, especially on a divided court in a divided nation, we deserve a justice who demonstrates a capacity for nuance, reflection and humility. Whatever else is true about him, Brett Kavanaugh doesnt seem to be that guy.

(6,418 posts)His partying teenage years didn't teach him much about basic human civility either. This guy's a victim blamer from the word go and has relied on his privilege to keep him on the "right" side of things all his life. His deer in headlights look is the face that goes along with the phrase "but...but...but...I'm a upper class white guy...how can this be happening to me?"

(14,094 posts)Yes, and there is absolutely zero chance that Trump would nominate anyone who has demonstrated those qualities.

(10,131 posts)Why does he pal around with Mark Judge? Why FFFF in his yearbook?
What did he lie about the 'spying' emails stolen from the Dems and not get held to account?
Ditto for torture. Ditto Judge Pickering.
etc
What about the $200,000 in credit card debt that hasn't been properly explained?
Why can't many of the 65 women who supposedly vouched for him be reached now?
How did Yale release quotes of approval on his nomination within one hour of his nomination and why is the alumni calling them out for supporting Kavanaugh?
The list of concerns is more than the above. Until they're cleared up, there should be no vote.

(11,600 posts)Kavanaugh is the poster boy for "Affluenza" - rich, entitled, not held accountable. Make no mistake, his Dark Ages attitude toward women is about the cause enormous harm to American women for many decades after he's appointed to the Supreme Court. He's the crowning achievement of the Republican War on Women and I'm afraid the worst is yet to come.

(5,604 posts)I don't recall this event, but as a teen I did drink heavily at some parties. I apologize if some action of mine was misconstrued when I was inebriated. He is a liar and a fraud.

Instead we are ending up with nothing more than theater.
