I'll bet he'd lose a ton of Republican votes and be out of the running.
The good ol' boys club couldn't bear it.

OP
That would run up against tRump's practice of never apologizing and denying everything.

Maybe - but it's a time honored republican practice to say whatever it takes to win.

If his initial response was :
I appreciate Dr. Ford coming forward with her concerns about my behavior at a party during time at Georgetown Prep. I can honestly say that I do not remember the interaction with Dr. Ford, nor do I remember the specific party to which she's referring. That said, I can not honestly say that the events as she describe them are untrue, including the degree to which I may have been intoxicated, and for that I am sorry. In the 35 intervening years, I have been a strong supporter of women in the legal practice and the judiciary and am proud of my track record. While embarrassing, this event does not defined me and I apologize for the pain I may have caused Dr. Ford though my actions.
It was not then and is not now my intention to hurt Dr. Ford and when I consider the combination of time elapsed and her description of my inebriation, I can not categorically deny that this unfortunate even occurred. I look forward to a swift resolution of the issues raised in Dr. Ford's accusation.
Now - that presumes there aren't a ton of other women sitting at home wondering if they should go public on their Brett stories. It also assumes that he's emotionally capable of sending a message like this. My guess is more women he's praying don't show up and he can't admit mistakes because, well...he's a suburban prep school white guy with more privilege than brains.
It's one thing for Hatch or Grassley to say "boys will be boys" but for him to do the mea culpa...his republican base would eat that up. They love nothing more than the redemption story. Remember, "W" was a sinner before he was a saint - in their eyes.

He would view Kavanaugh as a wimp, and the last thing tRump wants is a SOCTUS judge who will wimp out when it comes to argung a president cant be indicted.

I think he could have sold this story to Trump/McConnell saying "look - we just have to get through the next 2 weeks on this one and any water I can throw on the kindling will be to our long term benefit. It's on page 186 of our new bible, the Art of the Deal, where is tells us say whatever it takes to whoever has to hear it...just win the deal".
I think your'e right about republicans never apologizing but I think in this case, a couple paragraphs for a lifetime of reliable right wing whack job rulings...this would be forgotten before Roberts asks him to repeat the final words of the oath "...so help me God".
I hope she has the strength, the support networks, and the advice to do the country this service. And if not, I don't blame her but and we lose this seat for the rest of my life. As it is, we'll get another RW whack job from orange man. They'll confirm him post mid-term if R's win and they'll confirm him in the lame duck if the Senate flips. But make no mistake, they're going to get a rabid right winger into this seat.
