I went to a 97% black school. It started out as mostly white, then by the end, it was mostly black. This was grade school. It was a wonderful school the whole time. We had great teachers and the kids got along. Granted some parents pulled their kids out when the bussing started.
When I went to junior high that was a different story. It was also mostly black and the teachers didn't get the support they needed there. The education was awful. There was a lot of violence and disrespect. Some teachers didn't interact when they needed to or would walk out for most of the class.
Then I went to a private Catholic high school they had one mixed guy who was a senior when I was a freshman. They did have a lot of hispanic kids. It was a strange transition for me. The white kids at high school had mostly never interacted with black kids, many of the underclasses didn't interact with the one mixed senior, though he was popular in his senior class. His sister came in as a freshman when I was a senior. I will say it was a much better education than the High School I wanted to go to and immensely more so than the Junior High I had come from.
About two weeks into high school as I was meeting kids, I was at the lunch table and asked "Where are all of the black kids?". It was an honest question and the shock that washed over their faces and the comments that followed made me instantly know that I was in a much, much different environment. One that I never felt comfortable in. Some of the kids laughed at me, called me horrible names just because I asked the question. I always said, that Junior High was tough, there were a lot of physical altercations between the students but at the private school, it was mentally very rough.
I think all schools should be mixed and I think middle schools should not be wholly separate from Grade school or High school like mine was.
Anyway, I liked what the mom and daughter were doing to try to bridge these two schools even as they said they were just two people trying to make a difference.
