The problem with the republicans is that they have at least 8 different lines of defense going at the same time.
1. He wasn't there.
2. It was that other guy who looks a lot like me.
3. She can't remember the house, there never was a party.
4. It was teenage hijinks.
5. Nothing came of it.... it was just a touch.
6. She's a loon.
7. She's a democratic operative.
8. It's an international plot hatched decades ago to bring down the government.
I am certain that I have missed a few.

(58,785 posts)Oh, yes, and the vacancy on the Supreme Court Kavanaugh's "rightful place." You see, apparently whenever someone is nominated he now has a right to a lifetime seat on SCOTUS. tHE next step of being thoroughly investigated (supposedly) during the confirmation period is merely a formality where we...confirm our duty to confirm. Or something like that.
I heard this "right to be confirmed: argument nearly 30 years ago all through the hearing, including when additional witnesses to Clarence Thomas's behaviors were not allowed to testify. Again the argument was that investigation of charges it would be unfair to him and possibly take away what was his by right.
Not unfair to America. Under this thinking the rest of America forfeited its rights to demand justices of high probity at nomination.
