Ronan Farrow: New Kavanaugh Accuser Came Forward Because Democrats 'Came Looking'

Ronan Farrow’s run of bombshell reports continued over the weekend when the New Yorker published an article (co-authored with Jane Mayer) that detailed new allegations of sexual misconduct of embattled Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. These new charges come to light while the Senate Judiciary Committee had been negotiating details surrounding public testimony of Dr. Christine Ford who had been at the center of previous allegations that are threatening to derail the Trump appointee’s confirmation.

Republican critics have suggested that the Democrats have done everything they can to delay and stall a vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination, perhaps in hopes that other accusers would step forward. In an appearance on Good Morning America today, Farrow did little to dispel that skeptical claim, saying that the new accusation came to light after Senate Democrats went looking for this claim.

A rough transcript of the interview:

STEPHANOPOLOS: “This jumped out at me. You said at first she wasn’t sure if this was Kavanaugh last week, and you write after six days of carefully assessing her memories and consulting with her attorneys she did become confident that it was him.”

FARROW: “And I would say that’s extremely typical with these stories when you are dealing with drama and alcohol. The more caution that I have dealt with in cases like this frequently say, I want to take time and search myself and make sure that I can affirmatively stand by these claims in the face of what she knew would be a crucible of partisan pushback which is what she is receiving now.”

STEPHANOPOLOS: “Why did she come forward?”

FARROW: “She came forward because Senate Democrats came looking for this claim. She did not flag this. This came to the attention of people on the hill independently, and it has co cornered her into an awkward position. She said, point-blank, I don’t want to ruin anyone’s life, but she feels this is a serious claim. She considers her own memories credible and she felt it was important to tell her own story before others did for her.”

I can’t blame anyone who doesn’t want to come forward. It’s like leaving the safety of the armored transport and storming the beach on Normandy. Most people would not willingly put themselves out there, and it’s entirely understandable.

8. Let's remember: Debbie R's story is CORROBORATED by

a number of people who were in that frat house that night. No direct witness in the room has said it happened (some may have egged Kavanaugh on), BUT others in the house say word went around quickly that Brett Kavanaugh stuck his penis in Debbie's or a girl's face.

And once again, one side wants investigation by the FBI even though lying to the FBI is a felony that's taken very seriously. And the other side, as usual, does not want any investigation even though it would be of great benefit to Kavanaugh if he were innocent.

It's known that Kavanaugh was discussing a plot to admit the attempted rape happened but cliam mistaken identity. We need an investigation into both that and into whether Cavanaugh conspired with others, including close friend and adviser Ed Whelan, in a scheme in which they would actually frame an innocent man for it. Whelan, who had lived in Whittier, California, back then, managed to collect a plot-full of specific details from someone who was there. He then launched this evil plot via Twitter, including publishing the victim's name (initials C.G.) and photograph to show physical similarity to Kavanaugh, but this blew up in the media and was immediately deleted.

WaPo: Whelan did not respond to requests for comment. He had told people around him that he had spent several days putting together the theory and thought it was more convincing than her story, according to two friends who had talked to him. Whelan has been involved in helping to advise Kavanaugh’s confirmation effort and is close friends with both Kavanaugh and Leonard Leo, the head of the Federalist Society who has been helping to spearhead the nomination. Kavanaugh and Whelan also worked together in the Bush administration. Kavanaugh and his allies have been privately discussing a defense that would not question whether an incident involving Ford happened, but instead would raise doubts that the attacker was Kavanaugh, according to a person familiar with the discussions....
