it's not like they can't see it coming.

when you're investigating someone for, among other things, ongoing obstruction of justice, you kinda gotta expect some ongoing obstruction of justice....

Just look at the circumstances that put him in that position in the first place. Mueller likely knew upon taking the job that he was going to have to make all sorts of contingency plans, just based on how he got there. He has already passed off a bunch of his investigation to the New York AG's office. Trump can't touch them.

Imagine:

Kelly - The President wants you to resign.

Rosenstein - Nope. He cn fire me, but I will not resign. There is too much as stake.

Kelly - Like what?

Rosenstein - Well, here's what's going to be coming from Mueller over the next couple of months.... <snip>

Kelly - Holy Shit.

Rosenstein - Right? I won't quit. If he wants to fire me, it's just another nail in his coffin.

Rosenstein spends the next four days digesting it and sends it off to congress (Democrats included) right after the polls close in Hawaii on Nov 6.

Even a preliminary report if they can't wrap it up by then.

that there are multiple investigations under way that will continue if Rosenstein and Mueller are both sacked.

I do believe shit will get crazier as Trump gets more desperate. We are experiencing the Chinese curse of living in interesting times.

Rosenstein needs to ensure that firing Mueller doesn't end this.

"Trump's firing me on Thursday, so issue your report on Wednesday. Make everything public. Yeah, you heard me. Everything. Every pee tape, every cancelled check written in Roubles, video of every GOP Senator in flagrante with Mariia Butina, EVERYTHING."
