(4,674 posts)Every version says women should be silent in the churches and not allowed to speak. While this is still bullshit, it harkens back to an earlier time. Leaving off "in the churches" is a stinkier form of bullshit.

(32,100 posts)Most, if not all states have special "vanity" plates of various sorts. A lot of them are fund-raising plates, that collect fees for things like the state wildlife fund, children's charities, the various colleges and universities in the state, etc. My state has HUNDREDS of choices beyond the main tag. When I went to register a new car, I was given a choice between the standard plate and one that says, "In God We Trust."

(22,923 posts)The verse is drawn from the First Corinthians, and reads Women shall be silent and submissive.
Along with the verse, Hicks painted on three crosses, the fish symbol and the expression "Read The Bible.
"The reason I put this particular message on, I want people to read the Bible, I want them to see this message and say is that true, he said.
But Hicks said that the true reason behind the verse is because he is an Atheist, and he is driving drive home the message that the Bible itself is offensive.

(15,566 posts)I can't read it, but what's the other statement in smaller print on the right hand side of the larger verse?

(22,923 posts)That's what it says, which to me supports the guy's intention to point out the idiocracy of bible thumpery.

(15,566 posts)I just don't see how you get that he's pointing out hypocrisy with that statement.

(22,923 posts)Perhaps it's perspective. As someone critical of evangelical types, I perceive that statement as pointing out how ridiculous it is to base every argument on a bible passage.
Alternately, true believers are completely on board with it, believing every word in the bible is the word of God (even if those words often contradict themselves). So I hear you that there are indeed people who believe what is written on his truck.
I don't have a dog in this fight, but I don't see why -- if this guy were a true believer -- he would claim to be otherwise.

(15,566 posts)I'm not saying his "rebuttal" isn't sincere but what did he expect the majority of people to think about his putting that on his truck?
I'm an atheist myself and born and raised in the North, but lived in the South for about ten years, and that's where my perspective is coming from. Plus I'm female. I had never really been exposed to evangelicals until I moved there and it was quite the experience.
Thanks for the insight on your part. I find perception to be an interesting study.
