Teacher claims she was fired for giving zeroes to kids who didn't turn in their work
ST. LUCIE, Fla.
A Florida teacher says she was fired for refusing to give students partial credit for work that was not turned in.
I got fired. I was packing my stuff, and I was not going to see the kids, Diane Tirado, of Port St. Lucie, told CBS 12.
Tirado left a message on her white board, reading: Bye kids, Mrs. Tirado loves you and wishes you the best in life! I have been fired for refusing to give you a 50% for not handing anything in. [heart] Mrs. Tirado.
She snapped a picture of the white board and shared it on Facebook, where it has been shared hundreds of times.
Tirado, who was working as an eighth-grade social studies teacher, has been teaching for more than 17 years. She gave students two weeks to complete an assignment, but some of them failed to turn it in.
Thats when she says she learned about a no zero grading policy, written in red in the schools handbook, stating, NO ZEROES LOWEST POSSIBLE GRADE IS 50%.
Tirado feels that sends the wrong message.
If theres nothing to grade, how can I give somebody a 50 percent? she asked. Im arguing the fact that you dont get something for nothing. I want the policy changed, and its not just here."
Her termination letter does not offer an explanation for her firing, only stating that she was still in a probation period and can be dismissed without cause.

(15,805 posts)Handing out a 50 for zero effort is a slap to the poor kids who tried but still earned lower score despite their efforts. What message is that idiotic school board trying to teach with that grading system?

(23,339 posts)... for turning an assignment in late (without a good reason, of course).
Whatever the rules, it behooves a teacher to follow them until the probation period is done and they are accepted as full employees, with full union protection (assuming, or hoping, there is a teachers' union in FL).

(779 posts)If they are low As (90), I calculate 75%. If they're high As (100), I get 83%. Unless the assignment getting the zero carries a 5x weight to the other assignments, then yeah it comes to 50%.

(22,800 posts)If there are 6 scores, five are As and one is a zero, to get the average you divide 20 by 6.
20/6= 3.3, so that's B+
You're right, it's not so bad. You shouldn't get an A in the course if you didn't even turn in one of the assignments.
