The latest is to untenable.
The women who were assaulted should bring charges if they so wish and make sure this monster can make no further rulings on the DC circuit.

Women who could derail their agenda? I'm sure some of them are writing up bills now to go after us in some way.

(3,290 posts)in this case. What a foul person he has been shown to be both morally and ethically. He certainly does not belong on Supreme Court for life. Or any court for that matter.

(15,543 posts)I think not. Honor and decency are no motivation for them. But they will likely throw in the crying towel for the sake of expediency, and as an attempt to preserve whatever "respect" they may have from their degenerating base of "true believers."

I would say that honor falls under that category.

(17,862 posts)appointment to the Appellate court is tenable if he doesn't make the Supreme Court. The SC is sort of like the Presidency - anything short of a mega scandal makes you untouchable.

(11,495 posts)Of course we all know there is nothing "normal" when it comes to trump and the republicans in congress.
I think this new information "should" end his chances. I really don't think they can get the votes now, an even if they did, they would be slammed by the public for allowing someone like Kavanaugh to actually be put on the Supreme Court. They are in a no win situation, but we have seen a lot of crazy things happen since trump showed up, so who really knows?

The above don't give a shit about anyone but themselves.
But alas, I hope you are right.

(1,988 posts)If BK did these things, then he knows it.
If he did them, then he knew they could come out.
After Ford, he would have had to been really scared.
But when he went on TV and denied it, again, he would know if he did these things or not.
But he still denies them.
To everyone right of center, it looks like a concerted political effort to thwart the pick and hold up nominations until after mid terms. It doesn't look like anything else to them.
No, they are obviously going with the "left wing conspiracy" angle, will force a vote after the hearing and then try to primary any (R) Senators who don't vote for him. At this point, withdrawing means he lied. He won't do that.

(8,756 posts)But they won't.
Kavanaugh might, and it depends on the media circus and how the nation reacts to it. But the GOP is stuck between a rock and a hard place right now.
First off, the nation hates Kavanaugh on the court, but the nation also hates the GOP (less than 20% approval), but that doesn't bother the GOP. What does bother them is retreating on Kavanaugh is admitting defeat. Their pride is still too strong right now.
Second, the Ralph Reed wing of the party. The Evangelicals have been told by their snake oil salesmen that Kavanaugh is God's pick. If they pull Kavanaugh, they have to face that stupid anger. Already 2018 is bad for them. Despite gerrymandered Congressional districts and the best Sentate battle map in modern history. They can't risk losing that last loyal voting base that does show up in midterms for them. Ralph Reed has already said, if Kavanaugh doesn't make it, his people are staying home in November.
Third, the GOP has seen the writing on the wall. They know their run is coming to an end. 2010 set them up for a good run but that juice is running out. They've stacked the map heavily in their favor but Trump is so unpopular even that tilted map isn't enough to keep them going. They also know of America's changing dymanics, but because they are so aligned with the crazy hard right, they can't reach out to non-whites w/out taking serious heat from their racist base. So they're incapable of getting younger and less-white, all they have are tricks to keep them relevant. Stacking the SCOTUS for a decade is the last trick they can play. So they're going all in on that, and don't care how bad they burn up for it. Its like a suicide run really.

(6,262 posts)They can't withstand an FBI investigation. Not just because it will be bad for them, but because of the TIME it will take away to nominate someone else to rush through in time for October Supreme court seating. Just in time to invalidate the so-called Double Jeopardy case to eliminate state prosecutors of finding and sentencing someone guilty after that someone has been pardoned at the federal level.
Think this is on track to be heard -- not sure. Sorry, no link

(37,748 posts)But as we're in Trump's America (Staffer: Mr President, you can't try to one-up a trial lawyer. President: Here, hold my beer) forcing the GOP to redefine morality with every new morning, you may be more right than anyone knows.
