He is coming off as an angry old man. He is furious that he has lost the plot.

(15,428 posts)The reason the repuglicons don't understand optics is because they don't understand empathy.
They can't even imagine being in the shoes of someone like Dr. Ford or someone looking for a better life in this country without money to buy a green card.
They can't imagine associating with people like me (low/mid-class) or not in their prep-school/ivy-league university.
They can't imagine real life for 99.9% of the world.
They will learn.
The world is a harsh mistress.

(82,849 posts)Six FBI investigations! Although in his opening remarks, Sen. Grassley slipped up and said that the FBI had gone over Judge Kreepazoid's record for the last 25 years. Apparently, Sen. Grassley doesn't realize that time frame didn't include the time Dr. Ford is talking about. There has been no FBI investigation going back that far.
There has also not been a full airing of just what the FBI spent its time investigating. We know that a very large part of Judge Kreepazoid's government records have been assigned "Committee Confidential" classification, meaning that while the Senators know about certain events of Judge Kreepazoid's past, they can't ask him about any of it in open session. Grassley has also ruled that any Democratic motion to go into closed or executive session to talk about it is out of order. Did the FBI investigate any of the Committee Confidential material? We don't know.
In addition, the White House has withheld another large chunk of Judge Kreepazoid's record, citing executive privilege, a dubious (at best) assertion, but one that the Judiciary Committee has not challenged. Sen. Grassley again, if you must know. Did the FBI go through the material under executive privilege seal? We don't know about that, either. Certainly if the FBI reviewed, investigated, and interviewed people in connection with the Committee Confidential or Executive Privilege materials, none of that could be reported to the public, and none of the material under executive privilege could be disclosed to the Committee.
For Grassley to keep parroting the line about six FBI investigations is merely a talking point. It doesn't mean that the FBI has done anything like a thorough investigation and reported on its findings to the Committee. Grassley knows this, but figures (probably correctly) that the media and the public will hear "six investigations" and conclude that Judge Kreepazoid has been thoroughly vetted when he hasn't.

(2,699 posts)Grassley is a slimy snake. I'll give him that. He knows full well that the investigations didn't cover the period of time in question. At any rate, even if they did, they probably wouldn't have turned up anything bad if they investigations preceded Ms Ford's letter to Sen. Feinstein.
Someone ought to ask Grassley if, were the shoe on the other foot, so to speak, and these accusations of sexual assault had been made against a Democratic President's nominee, would he have consented to the rush to confirmation?
Actually, someone ought to ask Kavanaugh the same question: Brett, if you were up here and some other rich, pasty white skinned dude were sitting before you with accusations levied of sexual assault levied against him from 4 women, and collaborating testimony from dozens of others as to his corrupt and morally deficient character well into adulthood, would you give the dude a pass and hire him to SCOTUS for life?
Or dear Brett, would you say whoa, let's do some serious background checking of these allegations because, jeez, laughing with a friend while holding your hand over the mouth of a 15 year old girl? Man if that one is true, you ought be in jail for like a long time! And maybe go to hell when you die.

(82,849 posts)Is there some other item of business that Grassley needs to attend to? Because the Democrats would be amenable to a recess of the hearing until the latter part of October, or even the first part of December. The last Supreme Court vacancy was open for more than a year; there's no apparent rush to fill this one, is there?

(260 posts)I just saw yesterday that the nominee (won't say his name) has opinions that the dual-sovereignty double-jeopardy case (Gamble vs. US) that is up for the court this term would, if resolved in favor of Gamble would radically expand tRump's pardon power, by overriding a state's authority to prosecute crimes against the state, if he pardons them for a crime. It would give him undisputed power to abrogate the laws of any state, on his whim...

(37,648 posts)he is the same now as then. It doesn't matter to him that a nominee is a sexual molester. Or that a President is a foreign collaborator. All this means nothing. All that matters is can and will the person pursue the Republican agenda (money for the rich) with zeal? That's it.
Lindsay Graham, too. He's anti-female, if you follow his statements over the years.
The Senate has a particular issue with women. More so than the House. It's a bastion of male power, and they resent that women are interloping there.

(11,885 posts)He's lost all control , and now its been shown Dr Ford was not only a very credible person , but showed no indications of being evasive , or intentional redirection from answering questions , nothing like kavanaugh has done. He knows she hit it out of the ball park , and he will be blamed for it now , especially from trump. He's run the worst hearings I've ever seen with this issue. No witnesses, really? No FBI investigations, really? He has done a pathetic job on this hearing, and others. He's too old to be there anymore, and needs to be voted out of office.
